Definitions & Locations
Clarke’s Third Law: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
SETTING: Modern Earth, year changes based on thread or character arc. The most important locations you’ll find on this blog are found in Las Vegas (Vega for K) but most of the characters don’t have a specific location because off blog writing won’t take place in known cities. DEATH: Despite depictions in various religions and mythos, she doesn’t ride on a pale horse nor does she depict the end of times. What she does represent is the balance that’s important in any setting. People call her Death because she is who they see when their days are done, but she reaps souls not out of spite or out of some larger scheme of karma. For new life to begin, for new ideas to form, for revolutions to take place or for wars to be waged there needs to be a cycle where some people leave (death) and some people arrive (birth). SOURCE GENE: A genetic mutation that formed from basic evolution as mankind continued to grow. Like most things in genetics, the mutation effects different groups of people differently. Some are given the ability to produce magic (Source Witches), and some the ability to shape shift (Source Wolves). However, just with any gene there can be consequences if the gene doesn't mutate properly.
SAWVELL SYNDROME: When the Source Gene (formerly the Sawvell Gene) doesn't mutate correctly it can cause what most equate to an autoimmune disease. The person isn't capable of Source use, and in their teenage years when the gene should be fully developed/pushed further due to exposure to more hormones in the body, they instead become weaker and quick to get sick. This can be managed, but for some it could mean long periods in the hospital and even death.
AUSPICE: Warriors of Death, Auspices are people that have throughout time shown a true respect for the balance of things. They're not necessarily good or bad, they don't represent good or evil, they fight for balance. Most have died centuries ago, standing up for something whether it's on the front lines or on home turf. They are "reborn" at varying intervals, whenever Death believes they'll be useful. They don't relive their lives, always appearing the same throughout history. They don't remember prior lives, or the people in them. They are able to have children, between themselves and others, but all children are human and though the Auspice may know they've had children they won't remember anything about them or anyone they knew in the lives before - it was a safety precaution put into place by Death to keep them unbiased, because to keep the balance you don't always end up on the same side as the people you may have loved. They may not even always be on the same side as each other.
ABSQUE: Unlike the Auspices Absques are people who have made a deal with Death. As Death doesn't represent good or evil, she can be appealed to. Absques are people who have agreed that in order for them to live people that are important to them will be taken instead. The other person is not given a choice, and knows not why they're taken. Absques often only do it once, due to the guilt, but there are some who will do it every time Death comes to their door - essentially becoming immortal.
PINK OYSTER CLUB: A strip club owned by Peter Medevev (K), Freya approached him with a deal to a share of the club if she could also use it in her trafficking - basically an auction house to show off Sources, humans, and other creatures that strike her fancy.
GREER'S BOOKERY: A three story early 20th century warehouse that was originally renovated into an office building sometime during the turn of the 21st century. Agatha Greer bought it and renovated it into a bookstore, with her apartment spanning the topmost floor. On the first you'll find a general bookstore with best sellers and new hits, whereas on the second floor you'll find books that are rare, antiques and specialized in categories.
ADRASTOS AGENCY: The agency ran by Thrane runs out of an office building on the skirts of downtown where each member has their own office. There is also a kitchen, a conference room for collaborations and three rooms with beds for when there are late work nights or when a client proves to be safer there. They specialize in information - collecting it, getting rid of it, getting it out of people, etc.. Some play nice, most don't.
MONTGOMERY FIELDS: A small traveling bakery ran by Meadow, it started off as a food truck that moved to temporary locations. He can be located in Vegas for a week, and then Seattle for six months. He lives out of his van and only rents out small bakeries/kitchens when he's somewhere long enough that it makes sense to sell things. Usually it depends on where Avir (K) has show's and how long they're there.
GALERIE D'ADÉLAÏDE: A gallery started by Adelaide Montgomery once she retired from stealing/conning and became pregnant with her son Andy. After her death it was left to him, and though he doesn't run the gallery himself he makes sure it's well staffed and taken care of at all times and attends occasional events.
MONTGOMERY SEWARD: A fighting club, with a focus on boxing and mixed martial arts, opened by Andy Montgomery and Tyr Seward in hopes of getting people out of illegal fighting rings and into real fighting organizations where they wouldn't be treated as rabid dogs.
THE PAPER CRANE: A small all-natural herbal supply store aimed towards Sources but open to the general public. Co-owned by Arcadia Wilde-Ward and Holland Crane, but the store is really Holland's baby. Arcadia does some of the backroom work, but is mostly a silent partner.
