Four Steps to Clean Up Your PC and Boost Its Performance
PCs are awesome these days. They can do as much as a super computer used to when we were growing up, but why be satisfied with yesteryear’s numbers when you can clean up PC performance with these 4 easy steps:
Step 1: Clean Up Inside your PC
Precautions: Anytime you handle the guts of your computer make sure that you and your machine are well grounded. Don’t let static shock become a shock to your wallet when you have to replace a part. Make sure to unplug your machine, just in case, when performing your operation. Finally, be careful of turning fans too much and dislodging screws and wires.
If it’s been awhile (or never) you might be facing a daunting task: PC’s collect a lot of dust. Use a small electronics vacuum (never a full sized one – they generate static electricity) to suck up dust or canned air to blow dust away. If you use a damp cloth on the outside you can cut down on the “cloud” which comes out quite a bit. You’ll want to remove dust wherever it has collected – the buildup can overheat parts of your computer and make it run slower.
Step 2: Defragmentation will clean up your PC performance
Your computer keeps files related to each and every program. Over time these files get spread out as your PC tries to fill in the “next” space meaning that each saved document or picture might come right after the last rather than being close (on your hard drive) to the programs that use them. The more fragmented or separated those files are the longer it takes programs to operate. To fix this right click on your hard drive and choose properties. Go to the tools tab and choose defragment disk.
Step 3: Take out your PC’s garbage
Open up your internet browser and go to the menu, then find tools. Delete the internet cache. This is your computer’s memory of where you have been on the web doing this can clear up a lot of room on your computer. More room for your OS and programs to operate (since they do use the hard drive sometimes) means faster operation… deleting things you don’t need is your friend.
Delete temporary files by clicking the Start button and typing %temp% in the search menu. You’ll get a window of things that are safe to remove (you’ll need to delete them from the window) that have just been hanging out on your PC after they did their job of installing a program, showing a video or perhaps being a place-marker for a program.
Delete anything you no longer use and may never use again. It might be time to let that program or file go. The more space you have the faster your PC will run.
Step4: Clean Up your PC’s software
Finally, use a program to check the registry and for dll errors you may not know about. The registry keeps track of where everything is so if it becomes inaccurate… slow PC is the result.
Dll files contain information that several programs use so if these get messed up you may have several programs run slowly or not at all. A registry cleaner checks for both these problems and for others that might be hiding in your software. If you’re worried about not being a PC expert, the a good registry cleaner is what you need.
PC’s are made faster every day, but not much cheaper these days. Why spend the extra money if you can avoid it? So go out try a good registry cleaner and use it to clean up your PC performance today.
