            ❝ What, am I not a good enough gift for you? ❞ Toshi actually did have a gift for Hiro ( a rather large && overly fancy cake he’d enlisted Aunt Cass’ help in decorating && a sappy letter that he got embarrassed by && decided it said too much && shoved it under his bed && resolved to pretend he’d never wrote the thing at all ), but it was his civic duty to tease his big brother at least once.  ❝ If you want your gift you gotta come downstairs so I can show you. ❞

             Toshi’s hand shakes as he writes quickly, messily-- his usualneat cursive morphed into a sloppymix of cursive && print. He has to be fast, but there is so much he wants to say. It doesn’t matter-- if he doesn’t hurry && leave, Hiro &&their aunt will be in danger, && thatis something Toshi can’t bear to risk.Quickly, he folds the note && scrawlshis brother’s name on it, tossing it onto his bed as he opens the window&& slides down the drain pipe.

                                          ↪ i’m sorry i don’t have time to explain better.                                    you were right. i gotta go or else they’ll come after me                                   here and they’ll hurt you and aunt cass too. wish i had                                   time for a better goodbye but i’m out of time.                                           i love you, hiro. sorry i wasn’t a good little brother                                    sister. don’t look for me, okay? this time i won’t be able                                   to come back home.

             Toshi knows this is the endof the line for him. At least this way,it’s not the end of the line for Hiro &&Aunt Cass. It’s time for him to face hismistakes alone. Maybe they’ll end itfast && it won’t be too bad. It’s okay anyways, as long as his family is safe.

           “Hi-ro,” Toshi grumbles, trying squirm his way out from under his brother.  “I’m not that short!” Is he? A frown settles on his face as he contemplates the idea before promptly rejecting it. “I’m plenty tall for my age.”
