There are a lot of good movies coming out this year and a lot of major blockbusters, but I have to say that Godzilla is definitely going to crush them all. Come on, it has a massive (in more ways than one) cultural icon known around the world, it has a brilliant cast, it has a solid action movie that balances out and ties in with brilliant human drama, it has stunningly realistic visual effects, and it's being released by the same company that released TDK trilogy, 300, Inception, and many other brilliant movies that are known as some of the best of this decade and the last. Let's not forget, it does have some genius marketing, centered around the idea of "what the hell is going on?", with the introduction of the "mutoresearch.net" website, along with the new #demandtoknow hashtag based on Bryan Cranston's speech in the second official trailer, and this element of mystery present in all of the trailers. Let's not forget what they had done at comicon: in 2012 they had shown their first teaser which got great feedback, and in comicon 2013 they had shown not just that teaser, but a second that also got great feeback, and also bringing in the Godzilla Experience just blocks away from SDCC which gave a brief history of Godzilla with a bunch of props and memorabilia.
From what I've seen, I don't just think this movie will be one of the best, but I think it'll be right up there with the first Godzilla film in 1954. And honestly - I think this may be considered blasphemy amongst the Godzilla community - but I think this may even surpass the original in some ways. Special effects for sure (sorry tokusatsu fans and practical effects purists), and maybe even story. This movie doesn't just take place in one time period, or one place, but it takes place in numerous areas around the world at different time periods. It's been mentioned that part of the movie will take place in 1954, then in 1990, then in 2014. It also takes place in San Francisco, Hawaii, Japan, and probably even Las Vegas. It's centered around this mystery of something causing this massive destruction, but it's being hidden from us and we're not allowed to find out, but we know it's our fault and we're guilty of something. This movie has different layers to the story, but it's all told from the perspective of one family. That is just genius writing to be able to pull that off. This brings in the element of fear, and really shows how a blockbuster should be made. I'm very optimistic about this movie, and have been since it's inception, and it looks like I'm right in being so.
