This photo I took years ago, in 2015. This house was on NW 19th and Pettygrove. It was built in the 1880’s and was a Grocery store into the 1990’s. For many years it was an art gallery and artists studio. (Swipe to see an older photo...the tree was so small.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The building never got into the National Historic record so, it was fair game for demolition. I was demolished soon after I took this photo in 2016...actually I believe the blocks between Northrup and Pettygrove are completely replaced with new buildings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s amazing how much Portland has changed...through development...the whole facade of the city is different compared to when I moved here in 2008. There is so much drive for housing, condos, apartments...now I hear we have a glut of apartments. Just wondering...feeling contemplative...all these old buildings are demolished in the name of “progress”. What is progress when we don’t have universal health care, worker’s rights, medical staff without PPE, a better system to combat emergencies, and safety nets in place? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I appreciate the technological advancements of 2020, but I guess what’s wrong with a wonderful neighborhood grocery store...and going back to basics? . . . #tooheavyformonday? #backtobasics #historicbuilding #demolished #demolishedbuilding #portlandoregon #building #1880s (at Northwest District, Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_xbx6LB-7_/?igshid=6k2h3gmxih5l
