Steam Round-Up: Audiosurf, Demolition Inc. and Top Gun

In Demolition Inc, you play as a one-man alien wrecking crew, tasked to level the cities of Earth. That's about the extent of the premise. You get different items to place on the city - you see it from a birds-eye view - and you use them to basically organize disaster dominoes. The game is very cartoonish, but it's also extremely finnicky. Getting the cars to go the right way to cause the buildings to collapse is more of a matter of timing, luck, and prayer than actual skill. It's very obviously an indie game. It's fun to play at first, but I've been stuck on the same three levels for weeks now, because it isn't so much about knocking down buildings as figuring out just what single stupid-ass way the developers plotted out for you to complete each level. It's not so much a mayhem game as a puzzle game trying to masquerade as a mayhem game, and it suffers for it. I'd recommend it but I can't blame you if it pisses you off.

Audiosurf is very different. You mainly have to build your own experience, loading your own music into the game so it can build you a track. You score points by hitting colored blocks, each worth different points. There are a couple of different characters, but it doesn't really make much of a difference. The awesome comes in when you're riding a Megarace track through the iTunes visualizer while Hangar 18 blasts in your headphones and the track moves with the beat and tempo of the music. The downside is the game's replay value depends on the size of your music library. I've got forty-plus gigs of music on my laptop, so I'm good, but keep it in mind before you pick this up on Steam.

Top Gun is terrible. The graphics are lame, the characters and story are ripped straight off from the movie - the least they could do is tell us what happens afterwards - and the gameplay is worst of all, because the controls don't work half the time, are completely user-unfriendly, and can't be retasked to be more user-friendly. Your best bet would probably be to get an actual gamepad, which has slightly less stupid controls. Or just don't get the game. That's always an option.

I'm loving these deals!

I just bought Rock of Ages, Worms: Reloaded, and Demolition Inc. for ~$17 on Steam.  It would have normally been around $40.  This is so cool!  I now love Thanksgiving season.
