When I light I don’t always ask “where is the motivation” but rather “what do I want this scene to feel like.” I then contort the blocking and lighting of the scene to accomplish my goal without appearing noticeably stagy. There’s another reason side light dominates: it’s easy. Rigging top light requires more gear and more time. So don’t let laziness and apparent realism conspire to limit your repertoire of looks. Study how light changes the human face.
