Astro boy Fanart: Denkou-電光, The invisible Robot!
Halfway through Astro Boy 2003 and this little creature is the best character made ever . What do you mean they barely have any screen time .
I found this silly little ficlet I wrote years ago for the 2003 Astroboy show! I think I'd just watched the one with Denkou, because it's about how there's no way a kid who spent the first few months of their life with criminals wouldn't have picked up some things. Enjoy!
---------------
Three years ago, when Project Tarnkappe was just getting started and Denkou was merely a twinkle in his eye, Dr. Ulrich Emil had snuck down to the bookstore nearest the lab and loaded up on parenting guides. It was premature, he knew. Some of his more superstitious colleagues had even called it bad luck. Kokoro is still so poorly understood, they’d told him, over and over again. You mustn’t pin your hopes on it.
All he should have aimed for was a robot that could turn invisible. As a scientist with backers anxious to see their investments bear fruit, Dr. Emil understood this. But as a man who had never found time for a family but still so desperately wanted one, he couldn’t help but try for something more. So, he’d forged ahead, pouring all of his heart and soul into what everyone said was a pipe dream but what he knew was his chance to be a father. And it had been working! The kokoro system had integrated flawlessly, and all their tests had shown a complex mind forming in that sweet, sleeping head. Dr. Emil read his books cover to cover in the hopes of being ready when Denkou awoke.
And then along came Skunk.
Watching that man and his goons take Denkou away that day—the same day they’d planned to finally activate them, no less—had felt like death. It was his heart, his soul, his very life they’d stolen, and without it, Dr. Emil had withered. The next six months passed in a haze.
Dr. O’Shay’s call (they're here, we found them) revived him. Finally, finally, the nightmare was over, and the life he’d envisioned—the life Denkou deserved—could begin. Dr. Emil didn’t sleep a wink the whole flight, so anxious was he to reach them. It was only when he finally set eyes on that little green blip in a sea of humanity that his fears dissolved. Scooping them up (so heavy!) and hugging them tight, elation had consumed him. Hello, Denkou, he’d said, face pressed into their hair. I’m your papa.
Papa? They'd echoed, and oh, their voice was sweet! Then, they'd smiled, and understood. Oh! Papa!
And so that wretched chapter of their lives closed, and the next begins. Nothing but joy and precious moments lie ahead. Parent and child are together at last, and soon it will be as though they’d never been separated to begin with. Stepping off the plane in Switzerland with Denkou by his side, Dr. Emil smiles at them. They smile back.
“That was a long fuckin’ flight, huh?” They chirp.
Dr. Emil nearly trips.
Oh, boy...
