10 Mysterious Jagannath Temple Facts
Puri is a holy town in India. The Puri Jagannath temple is an iconic Hindu temple. The temple contains over 30 small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. The oldest temple is known as Vimala Temple, while the newest one is Narasimha. It is believed that the five sacred fish tanks are made from the wood of the divine tree.
The biggest mystery about the temple is the Sudarshan Chakra, the pinnacle of the complex. This huge metal chariot weighs a ton, and was raised without the use of mechanical help. The same story can be told about the giant chariots at the base of the temple. Apparently, the chariots that drew the pilgrims to the Puri temple were raised by human force.
During the day, the priest climbs the temple's dome, which is more than 45 stories high. The priest's task is to change the flag on the temple's grounds, which is an ancient ritual that has been practiced for 1800 years. If a priest skips a day, the temple will close for 18 years. In addition, the dome's shadow can't be seen during the day.
Unlike other temples, the Jagannath temple does not have a shadow. The main entrance is the Singha Dwara or Lion Gate. The sound of the waves crashing on the shore is lost inside the temple and then returned outside. Even cooking at the Jagannath Temple uses ancient techniques. In order to cook Prasad, seven different sized pots are placed on top of each other. The highest vessel gets cooked first, and then the others follow.
The temple has three chariots. The first one carries the idols to the river, while the second carries them to Mausi Maa Temple. The chariots are covered with 1,200 meters of cloth and 15 professional tailors work on each chariot. The tops of the chariots are shaped like the Jagannath Temple and resemble its structure.
Among the many other Mysterious Facts About Jagannath Temple, the most fascinating is its history. The wooden idols of Lord Jagannath are surrounded by a banyan tree, which makes it a perfect location for worshipping the god. There is no shadow at all. The temple is said to be a manifestation of divine power.
The Ratna Bhandara is the temple's secret treasure. Originally, there were seven chambers. Only two of them are still in use by the temple management. The remaining five chambers have been sealed for centuries. During this time, the gods and the priests change the flags. This is considered an extremely important ritual and the missing one could lead to a long and unhappily-received end.
