Hallo from Friendship and Utopia!
This zine was created out of love for the rich creative world of early 20th century gay magazines. Although unfortunately most of historians have forgotten about them. publications like Urania, Die Freundin, Der Eigene, and dozens more flourished in gay and trans circles, especially in Germany around the first world war. These magazines were some of the first cultural centers for the fledgeling transvestite movement, and feature beautiful photography and writing. We aim to create a faithful and loving rendition of this style in English! We hope you can join us in this effort. Apply here!
In the 19th century, periodicals developed all around the world. It becomes the first means to inform people.
Adolf Brand is a German teacher and writer. He is a pioneer in the acceptance of homosexuality in Germany. In 1986, he published the first issue of Der Eigene, “The Unique” in German. Based in Berlin, this journal becomes the first gay periodical of the world. The journal has to fight against German censorship policy. It contains poems written by Adolf Brand and articles written by famous German authors such as Thomas Mann but also photography, manifesto,... In 1987, Adolf Brand and his journal support the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, the first gay organization of the world. In 1905, Adolf Brand is sentenced to jail for publishing lewd writings in Der Eigene. During the Weimar Republic (1918 - 1933), the journal supports the liberal democracy and more especially, the SPD.
In 1933, Adolf Hitler rises to power and everything stuff from the journal is seized. Der Eigene is silenced by the Nazis. Its last issue was published in 1932.
