You meet someone at a funeral. It goes pretty well, all things considered.

A question about our lovely DecendTale boys, how would they react to Halloween? A bunch of kids and teens dressed as "monsters", galavanting around at night?

(I’m late for Halloween, but we’re gonna ignore that asdfjkl)

Bram (Descendtale Papyrus) is delighted! How wonderful to have so many new little friends coming over to visit! He may get off on the wrong foot with parents and chaperones by trying to invite the trick-or-treaters to come inside for more candy and refreshments—but of course the guardians are invited too, so he’s not quite sure why no one wants to come in… Still, he’ll get the hang of the human’s nuances sooner or later, and in the meantime he’s happy to go all-in on decorations and send the youths away with plenty of treats and maybe even some small toys, because if his house is The Good House, he’ll get plenty more coming by! It’s all very fun!

Kohl (Descendtale Sans) is…decidedly less delighted about this. He doesn’t want anybody coming by and nighttime is usually when he’s least likely to have to deal with any humans—now even the little ones are out and knocking on the door, ringing the bell, trying to get free candy from them… If he had his way, there’d either be no decorations outside, or the kind that send the youngest kids running scared before they get to the door, and a lazy ‘Take One’ bowl set out to appease those who brave it, probably one of the ones with the animatronic hand that comes down when you try to grab candy from it. Still…his brother’s happy about it and has made it very clear that he will not tolerate any shenanigans that blacklist their home from the neighborhood for Halloween so…

They compromise—Kohl handles the tricks and makes sure the youths are suitably spooked (“WITHIN REASON, SANS, DO NOT RUIN THIS FOR ME!”), while Bram supplies the treats and keeps everybody coming through happy (“not too happy, they’re not staying, keep ‘em movin…”).

I think outta the new boys Bram is my favorite. Is there anything else you can share about him?

I think on the surface, Bram (Descendtale Papyrus) would find a lot of fulfillment in work as a groundskeeper for the local cemetery!

He likes working with his hands and doing an outdoor physical labor job, and he gets to see the results of his good work in the well-maintained lawn and trees and shrubbery.

And the graves, of course! He loves the graves!

All the headstones and monuments are kept spotless under his watchful eye-socket and he loves reading all the lovely epitaphs people left for their departed loves ones.

He definitely knows more names of the people buried in his cemetery than he could be reasonably expected to know, but…he’s attached to them!

They’re like his charges, in a way—he keeps their space neat and tidy and picturesque for them and they keep him company while he works… albeit from six-feet-under and without conversation, but friends are friends, even the ones that don’t move anymore.

He’s almost certainly (unintentionally) creeped a few visitors out by promising to take equally good care of them when they move in, but it’s a genuine sentiment. He’d be mortified (pun dubiously intended) if his home was a mess when someone came to visit, and there’s a whole slew of people here who can’t clean the place up for themselves, with the potential for surviving family and friends to pop by anytime.

He’s providing a very valuable service and proud to do it!

I’m curious, does Bram make a new battle body eventually to match his newer tastes, or has he outgrown it in general? what would a newly fallen human be expected to see him in?

The degradation of Bram’s (Descendtale Papyrus) battle body is—much like the changes all monsters start going through due to their new diet—slow, in stages.

The chest piece is the first to go, too restrictive to fit comfortably against the spikes starting to grow out along his spine.

The sleeves of his bodysuit go next, not by necessity but because his arms are growing spikes too and he thinks they’re very cool, they should be shown off!

He doesn’t really feel the cold of Snowdin anyway, not anymore.

Unfortunately, having his very cool spikes on display does have a downside. His scarf seems to snag on them constantly, tattering the poor thing to pieces and filling it with more holes every time it whips around dramatically in the wind--which is often.

That more than anything gets him thinking that he really ought to update his wardrobe. What if he does happen to find a new human on one of his unsanctioned patrols? He looks a mess! What sort of first impression is that for winning friends?!

He starts shopping around for newer, more…intact clothes, less worn, softer, not so…intimidating.

(Was his battle body too intimidating? It was very flashy and cool, maybe too much, making him cut too daunting of a figure for a frightened human falling to the Underground.)

(Is that why they left? Was he scary?)

Well!

From there is where he starts exploring a new style for himself, a gentler and more sophisticated presentation, but it takes some time for him to integrate everything into an everyday wardrobe. After all, who wants to wear all their nice new things out all at once, before anyone’s around to see it? Especially when trudging around in the cold, wet snow and risking ruining it!

So what’s left of the battle body does stick around for awhile, mostly for his patrols and only gradually phasing out.

The last bits to go are the boots and gloves—and only because the former are starting to crack and the latter are starting to leak—and just before them, the threadbare and torn scrap of his scarf when he can no longer tie it and must regrettably resign it to the noble duty of a dishrag.

Nickname: Kohl (D!Sans)

Eye-lights: Eclipse blue (#000020), magic otherwise manifests anthracite black (#383e42)

Magic Specialty: Blue, red, cyan

Scars/distinguishing marks:  Only the left eye-light manifests, blackened extremities in a gradient up to the shin and forearm and darkest at the fingertips and toes, sharp needle-like teeth, thorny protrusions sparsely dotting his body (blackened at the tips as well), small with the exception of one slightly larger dark (devil) horn on the left side of his skull

Preferred Style: Casual goth, in line with the dark and occasionally macabre aesthetic, but without the commitment to any involved outfit assemblage. Favors all black and any colors that enter his wardrobe tend to be dark or gray-tinged, corpse blues and sickly greens. Strong preference for thick and heavy fabrics and materials, layering thinner, lighter clothes if lacking options.

Outerwear: Button jackets, mid-to-long, sometimes accompanied by loosely tied or lazily draped scarves

Top: Plain shirts, in a variety of configurations (short-sleeved, long-sleeved) solid pieces and almost never button-downs. Prefers rounded collars but not opposed to a turtleneck from time to time, singular (dark) colors or extremely subtle patterns

Bottom: Long pants, black denim a favorite, slim fit or only slightly baggy

Footwear: Plain black slip-ons, some boots, mostly combat style but with a few slightly dressier pairs

Trademark accessory/accessories: None, except that it’s rare to see him in any other color but black, and he has a noticeably slimmer profile than any of the other Sanses

Scars/distinguishing marks: Blackened extremities in a gradient up to the wrist and ankle and darkest at the fingertips and toes, sharp needle-like teeth, many moderate-sized thorny protrusions (blackened at the tips) on his body, concentrated along both arms and spine

Preferred Style: Dark academia, he’s fond of old-fashioned styles and wants to look neat and presentable, but practical enough to move and work in. Tends to avoid patterns or bright colors, as well as synthetic materials, in favor of simple designs and natural dyes and colors.

Outerwear: The occasional jacket or blazer, denim or wool, but generally prefers to go without (he likes to show off the spikes on his arms and that’s harder to do when they’re completely covered)

Top: Undershirt tanks beneath simple button-downs (usually rolled up to the elbow), often paired with vests on special occasions, or worn beneath overalls if he’s working

Bottom: Overalls, slacks (mostly plain and solid color, but some pinstripe), and jeans (cuffed), little else
