Some wildlife sightings at the workplace:
- Coyotes: One night, I heard an incessant yipping traveling all around our campground and realized the next morning that it probably wasn’t someone’s annoying pet. Another night, an explosion of high-pitched yelps arose from the woods near our camp. A handful of pups and their mother must have found their dinner!
- Black widows: A lot. Many. Numerous arachnids. All over Dripping Springs campground, and mostly all hiding under tables, peeking at our oblivious knees.
- Rattlesnake: A friend on our crew, Hunter, was lopping back a bush on a trail in Cleveland when that chilling rattle had him jumping back and warning the rest of us!
- Tarantulas: Some the size of a sliver dollar, some the size of my palm. The palm-sized ones were hairy, heinous creatures, yet somehow they were darkly intriguing.
- Jerusalem crickets: Thick, shiny, orange-red and black stripes; just plain freaky!
