I witnessed a beautiful thing today. And it gave me some nostalgic memories.
Growing up, my family was doing well financially, but we weren't (and still aren't, but now the situation is very much better) super rich. A normal middle class family living in India. I remember not eating out in restaurants often in my childhood, and whenever we did, it was a small diner. I remember my mom telling me to refrain from ordering super expensive food items, though my father always told me to not worry about the money and eat whatever i wished.
McDonald's was my favourite place as a kid. I used to think it was luxury. We used to go there only on me and my brother's birthdays, because both of us loved it so much. (and sometimes special occasions).
I walked in into a Mcdonald's with my mom today to pick up a parcel. One of the rare occasions she allowed me to eat 'western food' lmao. While waiting for our food to be ready, a little girl in a beautiful dress walked in with her parents and her little sister, practically vibrating with excitement. the family of 4 went into the special "birthday section" of the hotel, yknow, the one with the AC and glass walls and birthday decorations all over. A few minutes passed and her parents opened the box in which her birthday cake was packed. It was, a small cake. they sang a song for her and then the two girls ate the cake, they offered their parents to eat some of it too, but their parents refused saying "Beta, you ate it so happily, seeing you so happy has filled our stomachs as well!"
They had ordered a small meal, with two burgers, some fries and two cups of thumbs up. The same thing happened. Her parents ate, maybe one or two fries to please their daughter and then after finishing their meal, both the girls went home happily with their parents.
The point of me telling all of this is that, sometimes we can't or aren't able to remember all of the things our parents did for us and sacrificed for us, for their child's happiness. I know they aren't perfect, but they really do love you and care about you, and want to see you succeed and be happy in life. Go give them a big hug, don't hesitate from telling them that you love them, even though they give you snarky answers in return ( its okay, they didn't have the best parents either), help your mother with her electronics, watch some cricket with your dad.
Desi food shopping has a whole vibe of it's own omg
Desi nostalgia: Taking a million cups of pani puri water from the chaat stall because you have to buy the puris but the pani is free
Extra points if your throat is burning and eyes are watering but you won't stop drinking it just because it's free
