Another thing I Just Think Is Neat: according to the level commentary, the trees in Mz Ruby’s level are based on the trees in the classic fairy tale illustrations by Kay Nielsen:

You can see it in how the trees’ canopies are actually just a flat green shape, with only a couple dots on the very ends to trick you into thinking the flat green shape is actually a group of leaves.

Sly Cooper Scenery Appreciation: A Stealthy Approach

From the designer’s commentary:

“This was one of the first levels we made, and it has been gone over and over and over and over...It was really the test-bed for the lighting in this game.”

“The main goal for this game was not making it too dark, but you still get the sense that it’s night-time.

As you can see in the game right now you have teal-ish shadows all over...most other games use black as their shadows, but we have a different lighting (that) let us choose the color of the shadows-- we can make it pink, blue, whatever color...”

(”How many times do reckon you went through this level and relit it?”)

“More than thirty times.”

(”Woah. That is intense.”)
