While these are different stories, Devdas does in some ways remind me of Romeo and Juliet since they are both stories of family drama and destructive behavior. Romeo and Juliet, of course, is a story of miscommunication and lack of dealing with problems properly while Devdas is a story about traditions and what happens when you are denied that which you want.
I think that I prefer Devdas if only because there is a larger back story to it. It makes sense that Paro and Devdas want to be together beyond more than just attraction, which is what drives Romeo and Juliet. It also creates a situation in which the self-destruction lasts longer as well, thought the swiftness of the self-destruction in Romeo and Juliet is part of the point of the story since it warns against haste.
Devdas is very heart breaking on screen as it is on paper. It's been so long since I read it that everything's kind of fuzzy for me. I should read it again someday.
