Chapter 18: Monachopsis

It makes him feel like a spectacle, an animal in an enclosure to be gawked at and discussed in secret, but if he had to choose, between the awkward hush that befalls a room whenever he enters it, and this, he knows which he'd rather be subjected to. And besides, if he concedes, if he doesn't step forward to meet with the expectation you've placed upon him, then how will he ever find it in him to properly stand shoulder to shoulder with his son? Like you, maybe even because of you, that too, is his goal. Nevermind the messy tangle of logic that lead him to this circumstance, nor how much of it - how much of you - he still remains caught up in, limb through limb, skin on skin; much of his life has been dyed by the regrets of his past, and he tires of letting that dictate how he proceeds. Nothing in his life has ever been right. Nothing he has ever chosen has been good. But this is the closest that he has ever been, and what other direction is there for him to go but forward?

WAAAAAAAAA hello everybody!! I'm so sorry if y'all thought I'd abandoned this fic; I promise that absolutely is not the case. I've just been incredibly caught up in Yakuza 7/Like A Dragon, and then the upcoming Judgment Day announcent, and by the time I realised it, it was.... May. This is terrifying, we're almost half way through 2021, I am so scared lkshfgjkh. BUT I'M HERE I PROMISE AND I WILL FINISH THIS FIC!! I've invested far too much of my blood, sweat and tears not to. 🤣

But on that note, I'd like to make a very quick announcement: after this chapter, I will be putting this fic on hold in lieu of focusing on some requests and other odds and ends that I've been squatting on for over a year. If you'd like a more detailed road map of what I'll be doing, please check out this post on my tumblr! With luck, those requests won't take me too long, as they're nowhere near as intensive as Pact is, but in the meantime, I will be taking a break from writing this. I hope you can understand. 🙏💖

I'd also like to take this chance to say thank you, and also apologise for all the comments I've not answered. I'm... feeling a weird anxiety over them, and I can't really explain why; opening them and replying just scares me now, but I still want y'all to know I appreciate every single one. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me a little something. 😭 I will answer them eventually, I promise, just.. please be patient with me, I don't know what my brain is doing 100% of the time.

Re-reading Pact, I had a question for your version of Vergil. If he’s (understandably) so closed off currently, do you think if he had met up with Liv as a young man—possibly before the Tem-ni-gru—if he would’ve slipped up in the heat of the moment and bound himself to her, or do you think he would’ve learned enough about demons by that point to fight against biting her?

Whoaaa nonnie, that’s a very interesting question. 😱 I’d deadass never really considered it before now, because like... 3!Vergil is a very different beast to (how I write) 5!Vergil. 🤔 And the thing is, I can think of decently justified reasons for both of those scenarios? The only real connecting thread between the two (which does also apply to 5!Vergil in Pact too), is that he wouldn’t have done it  out of a genuine love? It’d be a very subconscious thing, because if 5!Vergil doesn’t know whytf he did it, then I think it’d stand to reason that 3!Vergil wouldn’t either.

Like if 3!Vergil were to succumb and have a lil’ nibble, the way he would have understood it is that by appealing to his more demonic half, it would grant him more power; he’d just think this was an offshoot of the strength he gained via his DT. And to his credit, he wouldn’t be wrong? ✨ Love is strength ✨ and all that, right? 🤣 Even if he could (and would) never openly admit to it.

But if he were to fight against it, it would be because he’s simply too reserved to let himself fall that far into depravity. He’s a Son of Sparda, not a wild animal. Though I admit I don’t think about 3!Vergil’s circumstances very much, especially when it comes to Nero’s conception, and his like... sexuality during that time, but at the very least, I do think any relationship he may have had as a wee 18-19 year old would have been grounded in something a bit more sincere, as opposed to [vague gestures with hands] whatever spurred his decision on in the first chapter and made Pact happen at all. 🤣🤣 So I definitely think he’d have resisted the temptation entirely. Like he’d just have put up with being in his rut for like a week, just horny gripping his knee the entire time jdhfsfdjh.

So all that being said, you’re free to pick whichever answer tickles your fancy more, nonnie. I know that seems like a bit of a cop-out, but this was just a fun little what-if scenario anyway; I’d hope you can just take your pick and have some fun with it. 😌🙏

Hello tis I thé calling Vergil kitten back anon: I HAD NO CLUE IT WASN’T HORNY THEN PLOTTY ON PURPOSE AND I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO CATCH THAT FEELING IN MY OWN FIC I LIKED IT SO MUCH?? (And I’m probably gonna play judgment next I’m just such an fps kinda person that I’m starting at the controls like an ancient granny hunt & pec typing)

KJHGDSFKJHG YEAH I JUST GOT REALLY SWEPT UP IN IDEAS? Like I kept on fleshing out the (then blank slate) reader character, and eventually, I had a decent backstory, I had ambition, and I had a way to get Vergil involved in that, and it all just went from there. 😭😭 Like yeah, Pact was always going to be just a fic about your sexcapades with Vergil Sparda, with an underlying slowburn and friends to lovers, but all that alchemy stuff, the ambition, and the backstory with Nero was 100% an afterthought that I integrated. This is why it the whole justification with Nero might be a little tricky to work around, but I’ll do my best to make it satisfying. 💪

ALSO ARE YOU GOING TO PLAY JUDGMENT???? AAAAAAAAAAAAAA I HOPE YOU LIKE IT. It’s... obviously going to be a very different ballgame to an FPS, but I do think that the game’s combat is the most streamlined that the Dragon Engine combat offered. And that’s coming from someone who didn’t like the Dragon Engine combat 🤣 I know those words probably don’t mean much to you as someone new to the series, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you ever do get around to it. 👀

ksjdhf thank you so much nonnie!!! I’m always a little wary of people reading (what’s available of) Pact from start to finish, because you can really tell when the fic went from being horny one shots to something with an actual plot/character arc/development, and I’m always so worried it’s a bit jarring? It... really has come a long way from what it used to be. Makes me wonder if there’s any kind of... visible growth in my writing as the chapters go on. 🤔 I’m not confident enough to say there is, but if absolutely nothing else, I hope you guys can see the effort and work I put into the chapters; there have been a few that have genuinely taken a lot out of me lksdjfh I’M LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU PACT 16
