Dev - God
Shayani - Sleeping
During the month of Ashadha, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep in 'Ksheersagar' (the cosmic ocean of milk) on the Sheshnag.
From the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, the supreme preserver is said to sleep for 'Chaturmas' (4 months) and wakes up in the Hindu month of Kartik.
Ashadi Ekadashi 2026: the mythology, the Vedic astrology, and what it means for your rising sign
Ashadi Ekadashi 2026 falls on July 25, a Saturday. It is one of the most important days on the Hindu calendar, and it marks something bigger than a single day of fasting. It marks the start of Chaturmas, a four month stretch when the energy of the year visibly changes gear. If you have ever wondered why your grandmother suddenly stops planning weddings in this window, or why your feed fills up…

In the Hindu Sanatana Dharma, Ekadashi holds a place of immense spiritual significance. Among all the Ekadashis observed throughout the year, Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi is regarded as one of the most sacred. It is popularly known as Devashayani Ekadashi, Harishayani Ekadashi, or Padma Ekadashi. According to the Puranas, on this auspicious day, Lord Mahavishnu enters Yogic Sleep (Yoga Nidra) upon the cosmic ocean of Ksheerasagara (the Ocean of Milk). Hence, the day is known as Devashayani, meaning "the day when the Lord enters divine slumber."
Devashayani Ekadashi also marks the beginning of Chaturmasya, the sacred four-month period considered a time of divine rest for the gods and an ideal season for spiritual discipline. During these four months, sages, ascetics, and monks traditionally remain in one place, dedicating themselves to penance, meditation, chanting, scriptural study, and the propagation of Dharma. Scriptures also encourage householders to observe spiritual discipline through a sattvic lifestyle, fasting, charity, worship, self-restraint, and acts of selfless service.
The Puranas declare that those who worship Lord Vishnu with devotion and observe a sincere fast on this day receive immense spiritual merit. Chanting sacred mantras such as "Om Namo Narayanaya" and "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" is considered especially auspicious. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, studying the Bhagavad Gita, and listening to the Srimad Bhagavatam are also believed to bestow extraordinary spiritual blessings.
Devashayani Ekadashi is not merely a day of fasting; it is a symbolic beginning of one's inward spiritual journey. It offers an opportunity to turn the mind away from worldly desires and direct it toward divine contemplation. This sacred observance inspires us to let go of inner impurities such as ego, jealousy, hatred, and greed, while cultivating divine qualities like love, compassion, forgiveness, humility, and selflessness.
On this holy day, many devotees undertake special spiritual vows. Some resolve to perform daily mantra chanting, while others commit themselves to scriptural study, charity, cow protection, feeding the needy, temple service, or leading a disciplined and sattvic way of life. These vows are far more than religious rituals—they are transformative practices that purify one's character and elevate the quality of life.
It is believed that four months after Devashayani Ekadashi, on Prabodhini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu awakens from His Yogic Sleep, marking the conclusion of Chaturmasya. According to the scriptures, all acts of devotion, fasting, meditation, charity, and selfless service performed during this sacred period yield manifold spiritual rewards.
Devashayani Ekadashi conveys a profound spiritual message. Rather than merely believing that the Lord enters sleep, we should understand that this is a time to quiet the restless mind and awaken the light of Self-knowledge within. It is an invitation to pause from the constant rush of worldly life, experience inner stillness, and realize the divine presence that resides within every being.
On this sacred occasion of Devashayani Ekadashi, let us wholeheartedly pray for the blessings of Lord Mahavishnu to fill every home with peace, good health, prosperity, wisdom, and spiritual progress. For those who walk the path of devotion, faith, and righteous living, Devashayani Ekadashi stands as a truly auspicious festival that inspires inner transformation and divine grace.

Devshayani Ekadashi 2026: Date, Significance, Puja Vidhi, Vrat Rules, and Spiritual Importance
The rainy season brings a deep spiritual shift in Hindu homes across India. Among the many sacred days during this time, Devshayani Ekadashi 2026 stands out as one of the most powerful and meaningful fasts. It is the day when the universe prepares for a peaceful pause. According to ancient beliefs, Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, goes into a long, divine sleep for four months. This specific period changes how we pray, celebrate, and live our daily lives, making it a crucial date for every devotee.
Let us explore everything you need to know about this holy day, from the exact dates and puja timings to the strict fasting rules and deep spiritual logic behind them.
The Sacred Calendar: Devshayani Ekadashi 2026 Date and Muhurat
Every year, this fast falls on the eleventh day (Ekadashi tithi) of the bright, waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) in the traditional month of Ashadha. Because the moon calendar changes, the exact date shifts every year on our regular English calendar.
Exact Timings and Fast-Breaking Muhurat for 2026
Main Fasting Date: Saturday, July 25, 2026. This is the day to keep the fast (vrat), based on the rising sun time (Udaya Tithi).
Ekadashi Tithi Begins: Friday, July 24, 2026, at 09:12 AM.
Ekadashi Tithi Ends: Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:34 AM.
Best Puja Time: Saturday morning from 07:21 AM to 09:03 AM.
Parana Timing (Breaking the Fast): Sunday, July 26, 2026, between 05:39 AM and 08:22 AM.
Why Devshayani Ekadashi is So Highly Revered
The word Devshayani is made of two simple words: Dev (God) and Shayani (sleeping). This sacred day marks the official beginning of Chaturmas, which translates to a holy four-month period of self-control, meditation, and heavy prayers.
The Beautiful Story of the Divine Rest
Entering Yoga Nidra: On this day, Lord Vishnu leaves his active cosmic duties and enters a state of deep, meditative sleep called Yoga Nidra. He rests peacefully on his cosmic serpent bed, Sheshnag, deep inside the milky ocean (Kshirsagar).
Lord Shiva Takes Charge: While Vishnu rests, Lord Shiva takes over the responsibility of protecting and looking after the universe. This is why the holy month of Sawan or Shravan, which is dedicated to Shiva, falls right inside this period.
The Pause on Auspicious Events: Because the protector of the world is resting, all major happy public ceremonies like grand weddings, housewarming parties (Griha Pravesh), child naming ceremonies (Namkaran), and new business startups are paused for four months until Lord Vishnu wakes up on Devutthana Ekadashi in November.
Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi for Devshayani Ekadashi
Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day brings unmatched peace and clears away negative energy from your home. The ashadhi ekadashi puja vidhi is quite simple, but it must be done with a clean body and a pure heart.
How to Perform the Morning Prayer at Home
Morning Cleaning: Wake up early in the morning during the peaceful hours of Brahma Muhurat. Take a refreshing bath and put on clean, yellow-colored clothes, as yellow is Lord Vishnu's favorite color.
Setting up the Altar: Clean your temple area and place a yellow cloth on a small wooden stool. Set up an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Lakshmi.
Offering the Holy Bath: Gently clean the idol with water or Panchamrit (a holy mix of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar). Wipe it dry and offer fresh yellow flowers, sandalwood paste, and incense sticks.
The Crucial Tulsi Leaf: Never forget to offer fresh Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu. It is widely believed that a Vishnu prayer remains incomplete without Tulsi.
The Sleep Ritual: Since the Lord is going to sleep, many devotees beautifully place a tiny idol of Vishnu in a small, decorated toy bed or swing after the evening prayers, symbolizing his transition into rest.
Crucial Vrat Rules Every Devotee Must Follow
Fasting on Ekadashi is as much about cleaning your body as it is about purifying your mind. If you are planning to keep the devshayani ekadashi fasting rules, there are certain do's and don'ts you need to remember from morning until the next day's sunrise.
Essential Guidelines for a Successful Fast
Total Food Restrictions: Do not consume any form of grains, rice, wheat, or lentils on this day. Eating rice on Ekadashi is strictly avoided in Hindu traditions.
What You Can Eat: If you cannot manage a completely water-only fast, you can eat fresh fruits, milk products, nuts, and root vegetables like potatoes cooked with rock salt (sendha namak).
Strict Behavior Code: Avoid speaking lies, getting angry, or using harsh words against anyone. The fast is meant to bring mental peace and humility.
No Cutting or Trimming: Devotees traditionally do not cut their hair, trim their nails, or shave their beards on the day of the Ekadashi fast.
The Evening Jagran: Try to stay awake late into the night, chanting holy mantras like "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or reading the Vishnu Sahasranama (one thousand names of Vishnu).
The Deep Spiritual Importance of This Fast
Beyond the stories and rituals, this day holds incredible mental and physical value. The change in weather during July brings a drop in our body's digestion strength. By fasting, you give your digestive system a much-needed break and detoxify your body naturally.
Spiritually, Chaturmas is a time to look inward. Since grand social celebrations are paused, human beings get a golden chance to reduce their worldly distractions, sit quietly, and focus on self-improvement. It teaches us that resting and pausing are natural parts of life, just as they are for the divine forces.
