DJIA Down Friday/Down Monday: Warning Sign or Launch Pad?
Monday’s market decline marked the sixth Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) Down Friday/Down Monday (DF/DM) signal of 2026 (page 78 of the 2026 Almanac). A DF/DM occurs when the DJIA posts a loss on Friday* and then follows with another decline on Monday**. Historically, this pattern has often served as a warning of further weakness ahead—but not always.
As the accompanying chart illustrates, DF/DM signals have demonstrated a remarkably consistent tendency to precede market volatility and weakness. Since January 1, 2000, there have been 271 occurrences, including this week’s signal. Looking at the prior 270 instances, the DJIA declined within the following 90 calendar days 260 times. Measuring from the highest close within seven calendar days after the signal to the lowest close during the subsequent 90 days, the average decline was 6.88%.
The pattern’s effectiveness has varied with the broader market environment. During bear market years, declines following DF/DM signals tended to be larger and more severe. In bull market years, pullbacks were generally shallower and often represented buying opportunities rather than the start of a major downturn.
There have been ten instances since 2000 when the DJIA never declined below its Monday close during the following 90 calendar days after a DF/DM signal. Notably, several of these occurrences came near important market bottoms, including October 2002 and October 2022. More recently, a DF/DM appeared on April 21, 2025, shortly before the market resumed its advance.
The current signal is particularly intriguing because the last DF/DM occurred in early May, just before the DJIA broke out to new all-time closing highs. That serves as a reminder that these signals can emerge near significant market inflection points, both tops and bottoms.
The chart provides additional insight by examining the 46 occasions when the DJIA never traded below the Monday close after the DF/DM signal. In those cases, represented by the blue line, the market generally moved higher over the next 60 trading days, gaining more than 8% on average. The green line, which tracks the ten instances where no decline below Monday’s close occurred during the following 90 calendar days, shows even stronger gains, approaching 11% after 60 trading days.
Meanwhile, the black line representing all DF/DM occurrences highlights the more typical outcome: modest gains immediately after the signal followed by increased vulnerability to downside risk.
With six DF/DM signals already logged in 2026, investors should remain attentive. History suggests caution is warranted, but as recent examples have demonstrated, this indicator can sometimes mark the beginning of a powerful advance rather than the end of one. The market’s next move will ultimately determine whether this latest warning signal foreshadows weakness—or another breakout to new highs.
