World War II Slash Fic Rec: The First Duty
So while we're seeing the rise (once more!) of WW2 slash fiction due to a recent new television series (Masters of the Air), I'd like to take a moment to discuss an old slash fiction story I read many years ago and which I return to every now and then.
Drawing from the Colditz (1972-1974) series, "The First Duty" takes the characters of Dick Player and Phil Carrington and evolves their relationship to a much deeper one, though certain events in canon could plausibly support that conclusion.
I actually ran across this story years before I'd had a chance to watch the Colditz series, and it was so well done I didn't feel like I'd missed much not having seen the series first - though I did eventually manage to get the original DVDs through a very kind gift from a friend who managed to get me the box set from Amazon UK, and I wasn't disappointed! The series definitely lent new context to the story I read, and I've gone back every few years since to re-read it.
So, if you've already gone through The Pacific and MOTA and want another series to dive into, you could do worse than find Colditz and get started on that, and then follow up with a nice long read of a thirty year old fanfic. :)
