THE SECRET GARDEN (1993)
dir. agnieszka holland
I'm starting a Batfam's book club, where I read books and assign them to a Batfam member.
The first one is Damian. I just read The Secret Garden and I couldn't stop thinking about how Mary and Colin are so much like him, and how Damian would love Dickon and his animals.
The next in line will be Jason with Vidas Secas and Memórias Póstumas.
WIP GAME ✨misha’s version✨
huge love to my religion of a human @thecreelhouse for tagging me in this. i can finally give my unfinished docs a little moment to shine, along with unpublished chapters from my current ongoing fics.
rules: send me an emoji based on the lost below, and i'll drop a brief excerpt from the corresponding WIP for you :)
[anons welcome, always.]
FOR MY UNPUBLISHED FICS:
this might sound insane but regulus is to colin craven as james is to dickon sowerby from the secret garden
When I show up to the underrated musical contest but the secret garden is already there
«I believe Dickon knows some Magic, but perhaps he doesn't know he knows it. He charms animals and people.»
«The Secret Garden» (1910), Frances Hodgson Burnett.
For the ship ask game: Mary Lennox/Dickon
Oh, very good question! Thank you! 🌷
What made you ship it? I mean - they're both still very young. In the film, there is a hint of a bit of (future) romance, kind of puppy love. And I can see that, because they have a similar approach to the garden (and one that connects them), in contrast to Colin who - for all of his appreciation for the garden - still treats it more like a king treats his kingdom, and less like a missel thrush would treat its nest.
What are your favorite things about the ship? Dickon makes Mary gentle - treats her like a wild animal that has never learned to trust and love, only to bite and scratch, and that among other things is what leads to her thriving and coming into full bloom. And they share this understanding of trust and secrecy which is, I think, the core of a Secret Garden and the heart of the story.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? It would not work - they are different in social standing, and even if they themselves did not care about it (Mary cares because that is how she was brought up, and Dickon cares out of respect for Mary's reputation), society would not allow them to be together openly and happily.
