Description:
The Autobody Bridge Program is designed to address the needs of young and emerging artists who are attempting to further their practice without necessarily attending a formal Graduate Program in Fine Arts. Students will be accepted three times a year following review of application materials and an interview with the Program facilitators, all of whom are working and exhibiting artists and professors. Building upon work produced either independently or in Undergraduate School, students will learn to focus their aesthetic, sharpen their technical skills that will promote the personal artistic growth necessary for application to Graduate School or entry into the world of exhibiting professionally. The Program focuses on Contemporary Art Practice, specifically Painting and Drawing, and advocates the making, theory and discursive critique of objects produced by enrolled students.
This innovative Program expects that accepted students will produce a comprehensive body of work under the guidance of the program facilitators in conjunction with artists’ studio visits, lectures and critiques. The Bridge Program provides intense immersion into the practice and profession of being an artist and will culminate in an exhibition (either group or individual) that is conceived and curated by the students with the support and advice of the Program facilitators.

Target Candidate:
Young artists who are considering graduate school or exhibition opportunities and are looking for something structured to help them produce a body of work. Young artists who have recently finished undergrad, are searching for the next step, but can't afford graduate school.

Instructors/Facilitators:
Jacqueline Cooper received her Masters Degree in Fine Arts from UCLA in 1998 and has worked for the last twenty years as an Art Professor, Independent Curator, Art Critic and Gallerist. Between 1995-2000 she worked as the Los Angeles Editor for the Chicago New Art Examiner writing critical reviews and longer editorial pieces whilst also opening an independent artspace, 208 South La Brea Gallery in Los Angeles. Having moved to San Francisco in 2004 she worked as a Professor at the San Francisco Art Institute and in 2007 she opened Autobody Fine Art Inc. on the island of Alameda and successfully took the organization through non-profit incorporation. Autobody Fine Art Inc. was the only contemporary art space on the island and specialized in showing sculpture and installation artwork. Jacqueline Cooper is currently the Artistic Director of the Sun Gallery, Hayward and the Fine Art photography and Video Coordinator of the Alameda County Fair.
Dickson Schneider is an artist and professor. He has taught at California State University East Bay for 15 years - Painting, Drawing, Art History, seminars on contemporary art, over 25 different classes. He is an accomplished artist in many different media, including Oils, Acrylics, and Egg Tempera. He also works in video and digital art. One of his activities is visiting the art world in person. In the past five years he has been to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Berlin, Munich, Portland, Seattle (and more) visiting the particular art scenes there. This has given him a first hand look at the contemporary art world and that experience has informed his teaching. (www.dicksonschneider.com)
David Burke received his MFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2002. He has taught art at various levels for the last ten years, most recently at Chiang Mai University in Northern Thailand. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and he is currently the art director for a local mural arts program based in West Oakland. (www.dburke.org)
