Do you have any art tips to pass onto a rookie?
Hmmmmm I tried to dig some basic things from the depths of my brain but couldn’t really come up with that many or that useful ones. It is also worth pointing out that these are pretty much just digital drawing tips since I don’t really have any general drawing tips to offer (;;๑•﹏•)
Use references and draw from life!! Avoid straight up copying or tracing them though. I think tracing can help you out as an artist if you do it in learning purposes but, for example, selling traced art is a no-no in my books. Also asking permission from the original owner of the piece you might be tracing is something you should definitely do, especially if you plan on posting the art somewhere. If you end up tracing I’d recommend tracing from photographs rather than drawings since you get a more reliable source that way. Give credit where credit is due!!
If you’re drawing something you’ve never drawn before or just in general have a hard time grasping the thing you’re trying to draw, I find it helps to start working from solid silhouettes that you then refine. It helps you get the form down a bit better and it’s always easier to start from bigger concepts rather than the details.
Try to use something other than black, grays and white when you shade and highlight your drawings. Those colors have their places in drawing and I definitely think you should use them but I’d advice against using them as your main shading/ highlight colors. It’s way easier to bring some atmosphere to your drawing by using colors for shading. Using multiply layers makes this as easy as it can be! The light purple I used in this example is a nice and pretty neutral alternative to gray.
As continuation to the one above, if you’re going for a natural look I’d recommend not using the “purest” colors on the color wheel. By that I mean these eyeburners:
They tend to look very superficial and lifeless.
In paint tool SAI, you can use the alt key to resize your brush super quickly which has really helped me increase my working speed!
Pressing the - key turns whatever brush you are using into an eraser.
Using big canvas sizes help you make your lineart smoother and if you’re looking to make some detail heavy art, large canvases are lifesavers. I personally start every drawing with a 3000 x 4000px canvas and expand it along the way if necessary.
There’s a few! If you come up with some more specific advice you’d like to get, I’m always ready to try my best to help you! Sorry if I wasn’t able to help out a lot but I wish some of this will come in handy for at least one of you people
