IT'S TAIORA TIMEEEEE!!

honestly i want to keep this on my draft a little longer (*cough* maybe i can save it for taiora week *cough*), but @dutchforstrangers gave me some encouragement to let this out a bit faster... so here it is.

remember when i said on my koukari mixtape that my playlists are gonna be messy in terms of the storyline? well, this is the messiest. i think i kind of overthink this playlist because i want it to be perfect. it's my ultimate otp after all. i really hope this turns good.

two of the songs are already included in @patamonn's mixtape post, which you should all check it because bree's works are awesome. aside lynn, i want to dedicate this playlist to my sora sister @sorasfishing! i hope you keep thriving in anything you do and don't forget to get some rest :D (although this playlist is more up to beat and not really suitable for leisure time lmao) (well, taiora's the kind of couple who's full of spirit anyway)

01. wonder - shawn mendes

i was struggling to find a way to start this playlist. most songs i had gathered somehow would sound better if i put them in the middle. this song suddenly appeared on my suggestions and i remembered the first time this was released, i... didn't really like it lmao.

but now i love it so much. the music is majestic and very... taichi-like, if i can put it that way. the last beat of the drums sounds adventurous and seems like a good prologue for a journey ahead.

and yeah, what better way to start other than our main guy wondering what it's like to be loved by the beautiful lady who owns the sky?

02. used to you - mxmtoons

i was thinking of two mxmtoons songs for the playlist: either this song, or falling for u. although falling for u sounds more fitted to the theme of "realising you have feelings for your best friend but too afraid to tell him" (you should totally listen and check the lyrics here), i settled on used to you because of two reasons. first, the music of falling for u is too cozy for this rather rock playlist.

second, for me, used to you has a more... personal touch? i mean i can put falling for u for a takari playlist and it'll still be a good fit, but used to you is more of a taiora song. in the official commentary, the song is told to be about the turbulence of a new relationship. but in my point of view, this could be about how sora became too used to taichi's presence.

the first verse is somewhat a description of sora's insecurity. as she grew up, she wanted to become a better part of society (that was why she turned to tennis, dressing more femininely...). this kind of thought is a bit overwhelming, and knowing sora, of course she would overthink them. since 02 did taiora very dirty we never knew how taichi really felt about these changes and i am pretty sure that sora actually wanted to know his opinion because he knew her the best.

move on to the chorus: "i've been spending all my time, sitting by the phone just waiting for a call. i used to wanna be alone 'til your name was in my phone, now i'm getting kinda used to you." look, i still believe that sora's an introvert. but if taichi called her, she'd be there in a heart beat. (also, think about that scene in tri where she got so stressed with taichi informing his soccer game a little too late. bet she'd been waiting for him to invite her from the very beginning.)

03. you're the best thing about me - u2

this is just a general love song, but the line "i'm the kind of trouble that you enjoy" is very cheeky i can imagine taichi saying it to sora with so much confidence.

04. beautiful to me - olly murs

if you're listening to this playlist on spotify, i will kindly suggest you to switch momentarily to youtube because for this specific song, you have to watch the music video so you can get a more taiora vibe.

the video is about two childhood friends that always there for each other but never really talks about the feeling until one of them is almost getting married. get it? (although yeah, the girl is more of a badass than sora and the boy is too aloof as taichi's counterpart.)

the song itself is just the singer trying to convince the girl that she is beautiful no matter what. i always feel like sora has a lack of confidence about herself, so this is taichi pulling her into a realisation.

05. thunder - boys like girls

this is a tribute to our war game (a.k.a. THE PEAK OF TAIORA CINEMATIC UNIVERSE), especially the dub version with that "you say you love thunderstorm." i think when you look at the chorus of this song, you'll get it why i put the song here.

06. she is love - parachute

i have to choose the full band version because the og version is too slow. the title seems to be... a description of sora? i mean she IS love, right? :p but yeah, i think this song is an illustration on how sora will still take taichi despite his recklessness.

spoiler alert: one of my digiweek submission will be taiora with this song :p

07. built to last - mêlée

i was in doubt whether i had to put this song on this playlist, but the line "you are the sun in my universe" convinced me. also, "all of our friends saw from the start, so why didn't we believe it too?"!? gee. everyone saw it, you two. you are meant to last indeed.

08. best friend - rex orange county

okay, this is the part where everything gets a bit... bittersweet.

picture this: sora gets a boyfriend. idc who the boyfriend is, but it's definitely not taichi. this is the perfect song because taichi will surely regret why he didn't confess to sora earlier. still, he wants to be her favourite boy no matter what. even the part when the singer says "but i still wanna break your heart and make you cry" is just taichi's way of joking.

09. give me a try - the wombats

this is actually my favourite song on the playlist and funnily, i found this song accidentally when i first built this mixtape. we can ignore a rather "miserable side" of this song and just take this song as taichi's way of convincing sora that they could be such a fantastic pair together.

also, on a separate note, there's a long distance relationship theme implied in this song. i never really explore this theme, but i always wonder how married!taiora will make their marriage work because taichi will surely travel a lot with his job as diplomat.

bonus tracks: i love you - billie eilish

it took a long time for me to finally decide to put this song. i want the closure to be very slow and solemn, because most of the songs in this playlist have been very upbeat. i realised that most songs are in taichi's pov, so i thought about searching a song from sora's pov.

i was thinking about gabrielle aplin's please don't say you love me. however, the tempo was still too fast somehow, and i got the impression that the girl in the song wouldn't let the relationship between her and this particular man to be more than just friends. and there's no way i let this playlist to end like that. enough with taiora not being canon.

this billie eilish song should be listen as a company to two other songs, and if you listen to all of them together, it's actually a pretty depressing storyline (maybe triggering, so i suggest not to google if you don't feel comfortable). however, if you listen to i love you as a stand-alone song, i think it can still be a good fit.

quoting from one source, this is a song about "something that happened near the beginning of a romantic relationship, but a little bit after a friendship." i think this song can be interpreted as sora's reaction when taichi finally CAME TO HIS SENSE confessed to her. her first thought would be he was joking ("maybe won't you take it back? say you were tryna make me laugh"). sora's the type who concealed her emotion, so to hear the words as blatant as "i love you" would make her very vulnerable.

yet the song ends with a realisation that she also loved him. and that is why i put an ellipsis on the lyrics above: i want to leave my playlist for an open ending!

(but if it were up to me, i'll surely put a happy ending for them ;>)

part 1 of lovers in japan series track-by-track commentaries;

since the beginning of june, i've been curating some songs that i think can be associated with my favourite pairs on my twitter. as the digiweek is coming and one of the prompt is "music" i was thinking to wrap them all into a playlist for each pair.

but... i end up having five playlists, and i don't think i want to put them all on digiweek because i actually have another fic entry for day 3. so i'm gonna save one for digiweek, another for a specific otp week (take a guess!), and the others for... well, day-to-day post like this.

you will find the playlist on my lovers in japan series. the name was taken from coldplay's song. please note that my playlists will not be arranged chronologically, so you will see the 'storyline' is kinda messy. i arranged them according to how i think the order of the songs will sound good in the listeners' ears, and trust me when i said i have listened to these playlists a million times to make sure that they do sound good.

please also note the songs may have different interpretations, and i know there's gonna be people who disagree with my song choices. as i'm also not that good at translating songs, this is just my take and 1) i can be wrong; 2) you may have a different take.

for this koukari playlist itself, the title and the subtitle are inspired from @skuag's koukari headcanon. ngl i'm so in love with sku's line about koushiro and hikari questioning things around them, and i put the line into this. i hope you don't mind! :D

onto the real commentaries now!

01. must have been the wind - alec benjamin

when i first heard the song, i thought it was about an attempt to save a girl from an abusive relationship/domestic violence. but generally, this song is also about being a friend to someone who isn't ready to talk about his/her own feelings, and that's how i think the dynamic between koushiro and hikari is. they will both be loyal and helpful no matter what to each other ("promise I'm not playing tricks on you, you're always welcome to come in. you could stay here for an hour or two if you ever need a friend").

the whole song mostly told about the girl refusing to talk, but in the last part of the song, it is also implied that the singer won't push her. koushiro and hikari are both very patient, so this song is perfect. another trivia is that this song is about two persons living in the same buildings and koushiro lives in the same apartment with hikari in da:2020 :D

02. venus - sleeping at last

this is just a general, sweet love song with a hint of scientific touch with astronomical metaphors. also, on the line "astronomy in reverse, it was me who was discovered" that i quoted above, i think it can also be interpreted how koushiro is always passionate about finding things, but then love comes and finds him instead.

03. hesitate - steve moakler

"i've always been the kind to contemplate but you like the kind that don't hesitate, so excuse me while i fall for you." yes. this line is just perfect for koushiro who is very polite and easy to get nervous, and i bet he's very nervous to start a new page full of love. also, i thought the first line when the singer says "the human heart is a scary part in fact" is koushiro-ish because it sounds somewhat biological, iykwim.

04. you can - david archuleta

i (maybe even most of us) often associate koushiro as someone who have no room for romance. even if he does, he will be very careful about it; talk about someone who is very conventional and believe in one true love/soulmate. so that's why when someone as wonderful as hikari comes in picture, he must be thinking this is worth the wait. 'cause if anyone can make him falls in love, she can.

05. livewire - oh wonder

livewire. electricity. koushiro. yes. however, this song is actually more from hikari's side. the first line, "i've been depending on the overgrown" is like her depending too much on taichi. "i've been pretending all my shots are blown, cover my heart up never let it show"—again, with the issue of concealing her feelings. "oh so heavy the water, falling down down deep down" ...well, somehow it fits the dark ocean, eh?

06. (they long to be) close to you - chord overstreet

so i really want to put this song no matter what because it's a simple, sweet, innocent love song—and gee, koukari is such an unproblematic pair! however, the carpenter's version has this line where it says "that is why all the girls in town follow you all around" and i think it's better to reverse the situation because... well, hikari is more popular than koushiro, right? the song can also be used for takari with the "so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue" but the innocence is just screaming koukari for me.

07. take care of yourself - maisie peters

i think this is the most important song on this playlist. the whole song itself is like things that hikari wants to say to koushiro. i remember @seventeenlovesthree once said that koushiro is very lacking sleep, and we know it's because he keeps working and researching. we even see in tri how he couldn't take better care of himself, with messy workstations, fashion 101 with takeru, and that horrendous dark circles. and when someone told him to just take a rest, he would refuse—saying that the world was in danger and it's more important to save it.

please also highlight these two important lines, which can also be good for yourself:

"you don't get a medal for the last one awake"

"and i hate how you're going through hell when you've never let anyone else, so cut off a little slack and roll all your cavalry back"

08. bright - echosmith

similar to venus, this is just a simple love song with a dash of moon and planets in the refrain. also, remember that koushiro's first kanji in his name is hikari, which also means light (bright)!

09. love u - shye

this is similar to must have been the wind, except it's more of hikari's point of view. koushiro is someone who's also struggling to reveal what he feels, but hikari won't ever push him and wait until he's ready. also, i've mentioned before in my headcanon that hikari texts koushiro more often, but once he gets busy, she will not disturb him and just patiently wait until the morning follows. this song is the perfect description.

bonus track: there are many ways to say i love you - sylvan esso

at this stage, you may probably know the general theme of this playlist is koushiro and hikari loving each other very subtly. i often said that they are not the type of couple who says 'i love you' blatantly, and this song is a conclusion on how they profess their love to each other!

part 2 of lovers in japan series track-by-track commentaries;

i always have a rather simple formula for mimato: i have to consider the song if it contains either music-related theme (such as music instruments), a rather push-and-pull relationship (a.k.a. yamato as push and mimi as pull), or mentioning "moon" or "blue". it will also be nice if the playlist is a mix of dance-pop and rock. that's why i end up with these songs!

got some nice recommendations from @tangledupblue but i cannot add more songs since i'm stuck with 9 songs and 1 bonus track format. maybe you want to do another mimato playlist, sam? :>

01. emotion - carly rae jepsen

i love this song so much, and i thought this is a perfect illustration where mimi makes sure that the image of her will always linger in yamato's mind. (yes, we like our girl getting aggressive :p)

02. over the moon - leah nobel

this song has been constantly on my repeat ever since the ep was released. when i read moon, of course i would automatically consider as i said above. i got more determined after hearing the lyric, "there's a space in the deep blue." this is basically just a simple love song about loving someone that makes you over the moon.

03. if we never met - john k feat kelsea ballerini

adding more of a pop vibe to the playlist. this song gives a good view from both sides about how they will live their life without each other.

this is more of my headcanon, but yamato's part for me is definitely, "if we never met, i'd be lost in a crowded room of fake friends, i wouldn't even know what love is." due to his parents' divorce, i think the concept of love for yamato is a bit strange. in addition, being in a band will make him surrounded by people who want to get close to him just because of his fame.

when ballerini sang, "i love it when the city lights, bring out all the blue like when i'm lookin' in your eyes," i believe this is words that mimi will say to yamato! as its counterpart, yamato will also think of this line sung by john k: "i love it when the only light is me, you, and the moon."

and don't forget this song also emphasise that even though their relationship seems "weird" (from the point of view of third parties) and maybe confusing, they will always come back to each other.

04. tonight (i wish i was your boy) - the 1975

this is just a song to describe yamato's desire to become mimi's lover also a song that may represent our desperation because they are not canon.

05. dancing in the kitchen - lany

the first time i heard this song, i told myself "this is a mimato song, period." dancing is something i can associate closely with mimi, and kitchen is just a place where these two lovely cooks belong ;) in other words, it's another simple romantic song that has a suitable theme for them.

06. like someone in love - bruno major

a slower tune which i thought suitable to describe the time when yamato started to realise about his feeling to mimi.

07. style - taylor swift

if you follow me long enough, of course you know about my digidestined fm. truth be told, when i made that post, i was only thinking about mimato for their songs respectively. i’ve mentioned that mimi is crazy about taylor swift, so it’s only proper to give one of her song in this playlist. i mean, we know mimato will be the most dashing couple ever, so style it is! also, the influence of @askmimiandyamato​’s blog title is super strong :p

08. heart out - the 1975

i don’t really like the fact i’m repeating a song from one artist in a mixtape, but i. just. have. to. put. heart out. because, again, look at that digidestined fm! i think this is the best song to describe yamato’s tsundere-ness lol.

09. neutron star collision (love is forever) - muse

i looked at this playlist and realised i didn’t put enough rock songs, so i was determined to search for a rock song as a tribute to yamato. the song should also be a bit slow because it would be a closure for the playlist. i looked at my soundtrack playlist and found this to be a perfect song, although it might be a little cheesy because it’s a twilight song. but hey, the song adheres the rule since there’s an astronomical metaphor inside.

part 4 of lovers in japan series for @digiweek day 3 / music // track-by-track commentaries;

yep i put two entries for digiweek this day.

the formula for kenkari is simple: the ocean. however, for this playlist, there's a bit of angst background. i always imagine that if ken and hikari are a couple, they will often fight; not only fight between the two of them but also more often with their own selves because they constantly feel they're so destructive that they're going to crush their lover.

also, this can be a companion to my kenkari fic.

01. life - sleeping at last

indeed this is a song about the birth of a girl. but for me, in some ways, this can be ken's first impression when he met hikari with her light and perfection. meeting hikari was a chance for ken to change to become a better man and to live a life outside the darkness finally.

02. i don't wanna be alone tonight - daniel toh

still and all, even after he met hikari, ken still struggled with the darkness inside. he's very afraid and he didn't want to be left alone in it, so he screamed for help.

03. easy - hunter parrish

i have to insert hunter parrish's song somewhere on my mixtape series ken also couldn't help but feel afraid sometimes. he was afraid that he would easily destroy everyone he loved, including hikari.

04. we're in this together now - loving caliber

...but the thing that ken often forget was that he had someone now. that hikari was with him. so hikari wanted to let him know that they're in this together now, so it's okay to show her everything inside him, including his darkness.

05. love is in the picture - jamie cullum

hikari was trying to convince ken that everything is different when love is already within the reach. if you love someone, you will help them without a doubt, and there was no need for ken to reject such supports.

06. lay down your weapons - elijah n feat. phawn

yes, it is a song from hikari to ken, asking him to just calm down with the battle and know that she'd be there for him. however, this is a song from ken to hikari also because as i mentioned above, hikari was struggling with so many conflict inside.

07. i'm here - sweet talk radio

isn't it obvious that they'd be there each other's biggest supporter?

08. oceans - seafret

i love this song. it's about two people loving each other, but it feels like there is something between them (the literal meaning is actually a long distance relationship). for me, even though they had loved each other dearly, they couldn't help but feel insecure sometimes, as if there's an ocean between them (...maybe literally? dark ocean?)

09. salvation - gabrielle aplin

they were not an ideal couple. they knew that. if they could choose anyone else to love, maybe they would. but they were too caught up in darkness and already found each other as saviour, so be it.

bonus track: don't you worry - oh wonder

...and in the end, i want to close this mixtape with a sweet tone. that despite every darkness and fading lights, they shouldn't be worried because it's them against the world now.
