This New Year was perhaps the most traditional one I’ve experienced in recent years: gingerbread baking, chopping salads, classic holiday movies on TV, champagne, and gifts tucked under the tree.
It was all made possible thanks to my sister’s invitation to join our grandparents in the village of Tyumenyak. Each day there radiated warmth and comfort—familiar childhood scents, homemade pastries, decorating the house, and wrapping presents filled the week-long holiday.
We spent most of our time indoors: waking lazily by lunchtime, tending to household chores, playing games, watching movies, and simply talking. The spacious house became a retreat, a place to step away from academic worries and embrace the slow rhythm of waiting for the New Year.
