tabbed browsing is so perverse
by far the greatest use of both processing and battery power on my laptop is just persisting all the tabs i open and then leave in the background, unable to abandon even as they slip out my working memory.
then when the number is unsustainable and my computer is actually noticeably chugging, i move them from the tab cache into the bookmarks cache, where they can be forgotten permanently in a way that i still feel okay about.
idk, did technology fuck me up or am i just a weirdo?
how many other things in my life have the same function as tabs and browser bookmarks? these things feel like the new photo albums, if you feel me. but because we can generate them in such higher volume they are also exponentially less observed. every single digital artifact, not just the websites i visit. weaving a faint electrical tapestry that nobody can read, save maybe some very large networks.
maybe that’s the real facebook data dystopian dream -- a computer so large that it can do all of the remembering for me, such that every memory i create can be immediately let go of, confident that when needed, or when it is opportune to sell me something, it will return to me through the machine.
