               How do e-receipts work?

There are two ways to explain e-receipts. One is when you make a vendor payment, and the other is when a customer purchases something from you and requires a receipt.

When you pay your vendor:

In the first case, you will pay your vendor for the goods you purchased from them. The transaction has been completed, and the funds have been received. You've both received the bank notification. However, in the business world, you would also need a confirmation receipt from your vendor to add proof to your payment.

Assume you choose to receive a digital receipt from them. If your vendor has digital receipt generation software, their accounting team will enter transaction details, generate an e-receipt, and email it to you. If they do not have receipt management software and you are still hesitant to receive digital documents, they may scan and send a paper receipt.

When your customer purchases from you:

Sending digital receipts to customers contradicts what has been stated above. You are now the owner of a business, and you have a customer. They compensate you for the goods/services you provide. You send them a business receipt right away because you are smart and already have receipt management software. This is how it operates.

 Environmental Impact of Paper Receipts

Many rarely consider the environmental effects of paper receipts or how many they actually accumulate each month. Over 300 billion paper receipts are printed annually in the US alone, using 25 million trees, 18 billion liters of water, and 22 million barrels of oil. Did you know this? We didn't either. These little pieces of paper can accumulate. In the US, receipt paper was utilized in an estimated 400,000 metric tonnes in 2020 alone. That is equivalent to nearly 2,000 blue whales in weight! That's accurate. A little slip of paper is accumulating weight equal to whales.

Thermal receipts are also covered in BPA, a non-recyclable chemical that means they all wind up in landfills. In a landfill, 2,000 blue whales would occupy a lot of space.

Don't overlook the impact of deforestation either. As they operate as a sort of filter by absorbing CO2 from the air, forests are essential for the environment. Actually, a single tree has the capacity to absorb the emissions from 5,400 digital receipt emails sent each year. Just consider the effects of cutting them down.
