sammy learned long ago the only person she can rely on is herself, so if she could not hear you behind her, she would kind of assume that hades screwed her over, because of course he would, of course this would happen to her, of course she would lose them all over again. she would not turn back, because she thinks there is nothing there to see. she only would look when they're out of the underworld and you tap her on the shoulder and say "hey you can look at me now", upon which she would collapse with shock and relief.

dirk would constantly be fighting not to look. he needs to see you, needs to know you're there, needs to know you're safe. he wants to trust that hades honored their deal, but he knows all too well what happens when you assume people will keep their word. when he sees daylight, the urge to look becomes unbearable, like a wound you promise yourself you won't pick at but physically can't stop yourself. at the last moment, dirk would look back.

blaine would try to distract herself by chattering at you, keeping up a stream of conversation, but the fact that she cannot hear you is eating her alive. the normal flow of your conversation, your jokes, your rhythm is broken. and then she makes the mistake of jokingly calling “marco?” there is of course no answer, and she can’t help but call again. and again. and again. until she finally cannot stand it anymore, and so she turns around, to see that you’re there, and safe. maybe the last thing you say to her is “polo.”

sol is no stranger to having everything he wants being yanked away from him, so he would be making damn sure he follows hades' rules to the letter. if he fails, it would be through no fault of his own. he will not look back. he is marching through the tunnel, tears streaming down his face, mentally chanting they are here they are here they are here they are here until he makes himself believe it. the instant he's sure you're out of the tunnel he whirls around and holds you as close as he can.

“There isn’t really a road,” you point out. “It’s just a trail, and it’s only about a mile’s walk.”

“Would you let me walk you?” Dirk’s sandy blonde hair pokes out from under his cap. “If it’s only a mile. I just, wouldn’t feel right letting you go by yourself when that coyote hasn’t been found yet.”

“My knight in shining armor,” you tease, but your smile is genuine. “Let’s go, then. Daylight’s burning.”
