Dirty Laundry made me so happy??? As an avid fanfic reader who only really gets to read fanfics of Japanese characters or White characters with the occasional sprinkle of ‘token minority’, Dirty Laundry made me feel like Mexican culture was getting its time to shine. The representation I felt coming from a hit work honestly excited me so much and while the jokes used were cliche (my purely American-raised siblings could care less about Gasolina), they were accurate and believable (my Mexico-inhabiting cousins and I don’t miss a chance to sing along to Daddy Yankee, ever).

La chancla is legit something my Latin@ friends and I joked about with our non-latin@ friends, we would bring up how it was terrifying, but in the sort of way that a kid embellishes their past memories to make them sound grand and exciting to the listener.

I was born and grew up in Mexico, my abuela would have breakfast ready for me right as the roosters woke me up with their singing, I would help sweep the house every morning, and I would run to a neighbors’ house whenever I did something silly to incur la chancla from my mom or grandma or heck even one of my aunties.

Christmas/Dia de los Reyes (because honestly, we celebrated January 6th more often than Christmas while in Mexico but as time went on we began to focus more on December 25th) has always been a hectic affair, what with tio mago and tia elvia and primos juan daniel y diana ivette plus dozens of other family members would shove themselves into abuela’s house for the evening— and we would sing song, dance, eat tamales and drink hot chocolate in front of our nativity scene.

The point of the matter is that I began to read Dirty Laundry when there were 8 chapters published, right before I left for Mexico for a few weeks, and I return from visiting my home country full of excitement to see one of my favorite ongoing fanfics having one more chapter out during my absence…. Just to realize that the author considered deleting it all because people shamed a young lady for handling herself properly and as respectfully as possible when it comes to dealing with subject matter outside of one’s expertise….

I honestly thought this was an amazing work of fiction that properly portrayed my people in a non-negative and non-demeaning light. I genuinely believed that this would be a positive experience to have non-Mexican writers consider broadening their character diversity to include Mexican characters and Mexican culture, but right now I feel like any sort of progress made for the inclusion of ‘token minority characters’ as something more than being just 'token characters’ may have been stunted by the hateful language of choice individuals.

Dirty Laundry and Why I Love It

So I’m going to admit, when I first binged watched Voltron, by the end of it I thought it was okay. I wasn’t super crazy about it, but I liked it. 

Then the same girl that recommended Voltron to me, was raving about Dirty Laundry. 

Now I will also admit to not being someone who reads fanfiction, or ships Keith and Lance. But I figured that if I didn’t connect Voltron to Dirty Laundry I could get through it without cringing or feeling awkward. 

Then I read it. 

And I fell in love with the story. DL made me want to watch Voltron again (I liked it even more the second time around) and made Klance a much more believable ship. The love story was funny and heartbreaking, I loved Lance’s family and Keith barely being able to handle his emotions. I loved how they handled Jaime and Lance’s relationship, and of course Keith and Rosa. 

I’m gonna miss something that came and went in my life so quickly like a summer fling. But I’ll have fond memories of it and read it over and over again.

I don’t often post opinions or original content on this site.  After some things I have seen the last few days, I find that silence is no longer an option for me.

This message is going out to @gibslythe:

I am so sorry for all of the crap you have had to endure.  Constructive criticism of a creative work is one thing.  It can be incredibly useful and a wonderful learning experience for young writers or artists so they can improve and hone their craft.  However, someone sending in their criticisms must be careful with the words they decide to use, just as you have been in your responses to those with harsh complaints.  You should always be treated with respect and I find it completely inappropriate and infuriating that some people have not treated you with the decency you deserve.

I hope you do not let this experience dull your spark.  I don’t read fanfiction (at least, I haven’t since high school) and I will freely admit I devoured your writing in one sitting.  Your passion and devotion to these characters was beautiful and an absolute joy to witness.  I truly hope you continue to write, whether it be fanfiction or original work, because you are clearly very talented.  Please don’t let the negativity stop you from doing something you love.

I look forward to reading your last chapter whenever it is finished.  I hope whatever projects you work on in the future bring you joy and peace.

Any Dirty Laundry fans out there?

The final chapter is scheduled to come out sometime this month and after all this mini fandom has been through I want to know who’s still aboard this ship.

I’m looking for supporters of the DL fic for a little side project I’m working on.

Really?

I am truly disgusted by the amount of hate that @gibslythe got because they wrote the dirty laundry fanfiction. It’s one thing to respectively give constructive criticism but it’s another thing to harass someone. The fact that people bullied them so much that she had to bring the fic to the end is awful. It pisses me and a whole lot of other people off. People like that are a nuance to this fandom and making it toxic. I have been it situations like this before and it didn’t end well. I don’t want that to happen to this fandom as well.

What makes it worse is that the author is a MINOR. A FUCKING MINOR. Come one people. There were so many different approaches people could’ve took to tell the author that some parts offended them without being an ass about it. People get so butthurt over the littlest things. dirty laundry was fun to read and couldn’t wait for a new chapter update and new fanart and other people were as well. Now its over.

To the people who supported the author and dirty laundry I would like to say thank you. You are the light to this hell of darkness and that is what we need right now. Not dicks who cyber bully people. I I just Hope that the author will get better and get treated with more respect.
