Can I ask what your process is for making new characters? As a writer that's what I struggle with the most!
So sorry I didn’t reply to this sooner. Also I decided to publish this just in case other people wanted to know, hope that’s okay.
For me, making a new character usually starts with a visual aid, such as: I see a lot of photography on my blog and character concepts come from the people I see in the photos. It’s not always the case, but about half the time, that’s how I get started. The other half of the time, I see a concept I like, and go from there (such as, say, an empath). How they look is either the first or second thing I start with, as it helps me visualize the character and bring them to life in my mind. Since I’m not that great of an artist, I rely heavily on photography, first and if I have the resources (meaning money) I commission an artist if I can. I have a lot of characters I do not have solid references for, right now, but I save a lot of things for references in a folder.
After that I have sort of a list. I don’t always name my characters right away, some characters don’t even have names, just simply concepts. The list goes from things like country of origin, age, height, languages spoken, to character strengths/weaknesses/flaws/etc. Flaws and weaknesses are just as important as strengths, in that they give the character depth, and something people can relate to. There’s a really helpful site I’ve used to help me find what type of character I’m making. I try to put my new character into different situations, just to feel out what kind of person they are. How would they react to someone having a public argument/fight? Would they keep walking since it’s none of their business? Would they call the police if it got violent? Would they intervene? Just things like that.
