I have been ruminating on this for weeks now, and I haven't heard many others talking about it, so I will.

I'm a Minnesotan from Minneapolis. It may sound silly, but watching Daredevil: Born Again for the first time right around when ICE murdered Renee Good made a lot of things fall into place for me. I have also been a fan of Daredevil for a long time, so the series, its characters, and themes are not new to me.

It isn't a coincidence that the police in Daredevil: Born Again (and Daredevil in general) seem to echo what we are seeing with ICE now. Life imitates art because art is political, because art is human.

Daredevil asks what happens when corruption runs rampant. When fear mongering, propaganda, and manipulation take over the system and ignore the people. It asks what it looks like for normal people to fight corruption, to fight the evil of the system oppressing them. Sure, Daredevil and his moral struggles are the heroes, but so are the every day citizens, the people interviewing, publishing articles, protesting, and protecting their neighbors and families.

Since the murder of George Floyd, I've ranted at many a friend about the idiocy of the blue lives matter movement adopting the Punisher logo. Not only does the Punisher kill cops, he kills them because they are part of the system that killed his family, stealing his life from him. They seem to have missed the entire point of the Punisher's character---this is what happens when the government turns on the people.

So in DDBA, what does Frank Castle do? He helps Matt fight corruption and evil, and he kills a shit ton of Kingpin's corrupt cops (mind you, he's already done plenty of this in Daredevil and The Punisher), because he knows what he's fighting for and he knows who he is fighting.

Kingpin is a master manipulator, a man who recognizes his corruption and uses it for his gain, topples protective systems and endorses murder. He creates his own "elite task force" of cops he knows are also corrupt to do his bidding. He uses violent crime to force people to comply to his vision of the world, which only benefits him. Seem familiar yet?

DDBA was created before all of this happened, of course. So was the original Daredevil series, years before. It's not a coincidence. Corruption is not new. Oppressive systems are not new. People resisting the evil they see in the world around them is not new. Fascism is not new. Dystopian stories feel familiar because the creators of dystopian stories understand that those are the futures in store as a direct result of our current systems. If you have to watch Daredevil again to see it, you probably should.
