She had ventured further and further to keep herself supplied, each journey made alone, spurred on by some unknown breed of stubbornness.
Why she chose to care for the filthy wastrels of Freeside was beyond him, but her reasons hardly mattered. She would soon be serving a grander purpose. Her hands would heal the mighty Caesar, and thereby purge all doubt and peril from within the Legion. And it would be Vulpes Inculta who delivered her to him.
He waited behind the charred hull of a truck, just barely within sight of the grove, where tufts of greenery had sprouted from cracks in the ground. It was nearly dusk by the time the doctor approached - only a fool would travel under a high Mojave sun - and just as she stooped to begin digging, he raised his voice so that it carried over the dunes.
