13: hand kiss
Royalty AU - Nicolette is the princess of the royal family and Shinichi is some knight or something.
He had just returned from his most recent mission. He normally would have finished within a day or two at most, but this one had taken a full week. It was nice, to be able to return home and relax. Or at least that was what he was planning to do. When he actually reached his home, it was already night and he was met with loud festivities and a huge mass of people dancing and mingling among themselves.
It would be nice if this party was for him, but there was no way Shinichi was about to act the fool and believe that. First off, if it was for him the party wouldn’t already be in full-swing and they would have waited until he had actually reached home. Secondly, it was easy to tell this was one of those unofficial courting parties. The type where no one called it a courting party, but all the men who weren’t engaged would try to get the attention of the soon-to-be-of-age princess, who was also his childhood friend.
It had been that way ever since they were kids. Her parents would meet with the parents of possible suitors and try to get their kids to be engaged. It was mostly for political reasons if anything. But Nicolette wouldn’t settled for a person she disapproved of and would throw a fit whenever she was about to get engaged to one of them. It was something Shinichi admired about her.
He was glad really, that she would stand her ground and act tough, only to go to him and complain later. And later when throwing a tantrum became unacceptable for her age, she would always use him as an excuse to not accept anyone. It was always just used as an excuse, and while Shinichi mildly protested at first, he didn’t say anything against it now. It wasn’t like he had anyone he wanted to court, and if he was being honest with himself, he was starting to have feelings for Nicolette.
Well, starting would probably be the wrong term. He probably always had these feelings but it wasn’t until recently that he realized what they were. Which, was why he was rather annoyed that these courting parties happened whenever he went away.
Shinichi stayed within the shadows and allowed a small smirk to grow on his face as he spotted Nicolette, in the middle of a crowd of men. She wasn’t particular happy about these situations, and to Shinichi it clearly showed on her face. After all, she wasn’t the type that would just go with whatever even if it was the ‘proper’ thing to do. He could tell she was getting more and more annoyed with the men surrounding her, and to be honest he was surprised she hadn’t yelled at them all to go away by now.
Weaving through the crowd while drawing as little attention to himself as possible, Shinichi made his way to where Nicolette was. Tapping the man who was currently dancing with her, he took his place and held Nicolette’s hand in his own.
With a wink, more so they could laugh about it later than an attempt at flirting, he placed a kiss on Nicolette’s hand and smiled up at her. “May I have this dance?”
