Zar was the only person, who came to mind; the only one Nunnally could call to pick her up from this middle of nowhere. The only one, who would actually come, and the only one she trusted (enough) to keep it to himself rather than immediately inform on her. They had once been close friends, almost inseparable, but their paths had drifted apart...
Still, Zar was the first, and only, person Nunnally thought could help her now.
He frightened her, though. She jumped in the booth when he knocked on the window (not expecting him so soon). But the look of relief painted across her pale face must have told him everything; or at least enough of what she had been through. Nunnally looked out of place, and she knew it. Her dress was far too light for the weather; too delicate and too expensive for a place like this. When he mentioned he had come by bike, she briefly wondered how she would manage in her outfit. Still, that hardly mattered. At least she was no longer alone.
Nunnally pushed an extra cup towards him and took a sip of her coffee, grimacing in mild disgust.
“It’s bad, but I’ve had worse.” – she said with a small shrug – “I was pretending to wait for someone… to keep unwanted company away. I didn’t expect you to come so quickly.”
Another shrug.
“An unsuccessful date. I dumped him… Or he dumped me. The stories probably differ.” – her grip tightened around the cup, almost enough to crack it – “He left me not far from here…even took my jacket with him.” – she exhaled softly, as if only now realizing how fortunate she was to have kept her phone and purse.
“I suppose I should start by saying thank you.” – she offered a faint smile – “So… um…thank you.”
