So here's a DVD player that was capable of playing DIVX, which is a proprietary video format that is all about someone getting paid, and was one of the reasons why Circuit City is no longer in business.
To use the discs you had to buy a designated media player, a purchase consumers had grown very tired of in the late 1990s. Another problem was that the media spied on customers and uploaded data to the manufacturer. DivX flopped and was discontinued within a year.
And by "within a year", they mean that according to Wikipedia it lasted 53 weeks... June 8, 1998 to June 16, 1999. Shown here is a RCA RC-5230Z, which hit the market on October 3, 1998.
