The last of DJL's pretties purchased in Oxfam today, and what a pretty thing it is, too. From the Chatto & Windus Phoenix Library, its dust jacket is in almost perfect nick (apart from a couple of rips at the back) and is altogether a thing of 1930s beauty. And underneath the phoenix-adorned dust jacket is brown cloth with a phoenix impression in the centre of the cover, and - wait for it - a floral spine! Oh rapture! An actual gold-embellished floral spine! The plays in question are: Three Sisters; Ivanov; A Swan-Song; An Unwilling Martyr; On the High Road; The Wedding. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the 1930s spelling of Chekhov? Be envious. It's DJL's and you can't have it.
