“ Forgive. I hate holding grudges. But … it’s difficult not to remain wary of certain things, which I think comes more in the territory of forgetting. Or, well, not forgetting. ”

01: What are your plans for this weekend?

A whole lot of bullshit, honestly. I’m so far behind on paperwork for the school it’s a wonder no one’s fired me yet. Not that anyone else is really worried about doing their jobs, either. I’ve also got a few meetings with the Council, see if we can’t shake something loose about what the hell to do to find this poor boy. 

Sorry I’m not doin’ anything more entertaining. 

07: Have you ever broken someone’s heart?

I don’t think I have, really. I only dated one other girl before Aisha, seriously at least, and we’re still good friends. She just had her third kid, a little girl. 

10: What’s irritating you right now?

Is it a cop-out to say everything? No, no, it’s not everything. My beautiful wife would gut punch me if I included her in this. Honestly? My biggest irritation now is the lack of answers and the press insisting that we have ‘em. Trust me, vultures, if I had any answers at all, you’d fucking know.

019 — How old were you when you had your first kiss?

“ It was a kid named Tommy Schaefer, on the last day of school in the eighth grade. He was the first boy in my class to hit six feet, so that was basically the jackpot for fourteen year old me and all of my friends. He was going to a private high school, so we met under the slide at the elementary school’s playground to say goodbye, and he kissed me. It sucked, but for the rest of the summer I considered it peak romance. ”

013 — Do you have trust issues?

“ From a police standpoint, duh. I have to take everything with a grain of salt. But in my personal life … I try not to be jaded, and to trust people until they give me a reason not to. And sometimes, well, even then. ”

05 — Do you miss anybody from your past?

“ Is everybody an answer? Okay, well, maybe not … everybody, but — I’m a people person, I like to make connections. And saying goodbye to those connections can be hard. Like, my neighbors at my parents’ house would always let me swim in their pool. That, and their son was cute. I have plenty of stories in that pool house, but that’s beside the point. ”

11 — Does somebody love you?

“ At all? Sure. My parents do, I know that. Romantically? I … would seriously doubt it. Not that I’m like … horribly grotesque, or have a horrible personality or something. But, my boyfriend sophomore year of high school did tell me I wasn’t marriage material. Yeah, sophomore year. Weirdo. I’d make a joke about becoming a spinster, but … I’m not even really a cat person. ”

15 — Who was the last person you cried in front of?

“ I don’t like to cry in front of people. I feel … like it’s not bad to display emotion, but I need to prove myself, right? I’m new to the force, new to town, and a girl in a whole big boy’s club. If I cry in front of anyone, people are going to think it’s weakness. Even if it isn’t. And — well, I want to be taken seriously. I honestly don’t remember, but … I’ve cried home alone pretty recently, let’s leave it at that.  ”

18 — Is this the best year of your life?

“ Definitely not.  I don’t want to rank and categorize … but know. It’d be selfish to qualify it as that, right? With everything that’s going on? I can’t in good conscience look at my life and act like things are … amazing around Devil’s Knot right now. My life’s been pretty good so far, but … as far as I’m concerned? I’m still waiting for my best year. ”

10 — What’s irritating you right now?

“ A lack of answers. Things feel so … incomplete. Like something is wrong. And, I mean, something is wrong — CLEARLY. But something different. And I can’t exactly change it. And, less somberly and more in terms of daily irritations … my fucking hot water is out again, even though I called my landlord like seven times. Do you want to know what a cold shower feels like at five in the morning? Not good.  ”

“ Coffee. Lots of late nights recently, and I want to cut back on it … but tea isn’t cutting it nowadays. There’s too much work to be done. Especially right now. ”

09 — Do you bite your nails?

“ No. I did when I was a kid, until my mother made me soak my fingertips in nail polish remover to make my fingers taste bad. Now I’ll admittedly pick at my cuticles, which I’m sure is just as infuriating for her. But I’m twenty nine instead of nine now, so I’d say I’m pretty safe from any bitter tasting wrath. ”
