For mine, I submitted the pieces I was the most proud of in a variety of materials and mediums. Maybe you can see if the school you want to go to does a portfolio check? They can give you advice in person.
sadly the school is in ny, but i plan on calling tomorrow morning. i plan on showing off ink, color pencil and both oil and water color paints :O

I never had to submit a portfolio for college, but I know that when it comes to submitting you definitely want variety. If you have more than digital art, show that you have a handle on traditional art. Provide life drawings if you have. Any art of backgrounds and drawings of non-organic things (because 9/10 portfolios have just people, animals, creatures in it and no background art). Portfolios are there to show what you are capable of, and your level of skill.
oooh! that’s really helpful, thank you! the school i’m applying says to keep digital to a minimum, so i’ll defiantly take your advice!

depending on exactly how many pieces you need to submit, make it at least around half of stuff from life (still lives, portraits, natures studies, etc.) and over half of original work in your designated area. you can use fanart, but really only go for it if you think it's something that no one would know
that’s good to keep in mind, but i’ll avoid fanart though.
thanks everyone for the responses! i really appreciate ya’ll taking the time to help me out. ;v;
since in currently sick as a dog, blackmadhi sickfic? its ultimately up to you who's the sick one, but my suggestion is simon... just because we hardly see the chinks in his armor :D
I am also sick (the rapidly changing weather is killing my sinuses sob the headachesss), so this sounds perfect!

“Go home,Blackquill.”
“I’m fine, Edgeworth-dono.”
Edgeworth gave his subordinate his trademarkscowl, but unlike practically everyone else who worked under him, it had zeroeffect on Simon Blackquill, who just returned the look with a hard-pointedglare of his own. It would have been more intimidating if Simon didn’t appeareven paler than normal, and if he hadn’t sniffled right after deliveringit. Edgeworth had grown tired of hearingSimon’s loud coughing from down the hall. Although he was still understaffed, he could barely get his own stuffdone. Besides, there was a highlikelihood that Simon would end up needing to redo everything anyway, sokeeping him here was nothing but a waste of time and effort.
“Go home,”Edgeworth repeated. I can’t have yougetting everyone in this office sick.”
“Then just stay away from me let me work? Tell everyone else to do the same. I know you’re still searching for newprosecutors, so is it really a good idea to understaff yourself more by sending me away? Besides…I’m fine.”
“Your little suggestion tactics won’t work on me,Blackquill. Right now having you here ishurting the overall efficiency of theoffice. And you’re clearly not fine, judging from how loud your coughinghas been.”
“I’m-”
“Enough. I’m calling you a car right now. You will go home and rest. We won’t discuss this further.”
Before Simon was able to protest, his boss was onhis cell phone and getting him transportation back to his apartment. It took another ten minutes before the carwas in the building, and Edgeworth himself had escorted Simon until hissubordinate was seated in the back.
“Take him here,” Edgeworth told the driver, handing him a piece of paper with Simon’s address on it. “Do nottake him anywhere else.” And Edgeworthhanded the driver a few large bills, leading to an emphatic agreement on thedriver’s part. Simon rolled his eyes, sinking in the seat with his arms crossed, like some little kid who wasn’tgetting his way. Why did Edgeworth-donohave to micromanage so much?
After telling Simon to go rest, Edgeworth walkedback into the building, and the car drove off. Simon’s stubbornness was battling with his genuine gratitude for Miles’actions; he really wasn’t feelinggreat. His nose was stuffy and hisviolent coughing had caused him to have a rather horrid headache and a sore throat, and whenever he stoodup he felt dizzy. Not to mention he justfelt so goddamn hot even though itreally wasn’t all too warm out. He hadn’tbeen this sick in quite some time.
When the car pulled up to his apartment building,he grunted out a goodbye to his driver and slowly made his way up thestairs. He actually had to grab onto thehandle and hoist himself up at some points, and part of him was tempted to justsit down on the steps, but he pressed on. Once he finally reached his door, he immediately fell into his couch assoon as he stepped into his home.
Only…maybe he shouldn’t have plopped down sohard. The landing exacerbated hisalready excruciating headache, and he groaned loudly. Taka flew over to him and thankfully did notscreech in his ear, but did nestle into his hair comfortably. Maybe if he just…napped for a little bit, hecould wake up and miraculously feel better.
He wasn’t sure how long he was asleep for; theonly thing he knew was that Nahyuta was leaning down and staring at him when hewoke up. Taka had flown away, leavingsome rogue feathers lodged in his ponytail. “…Don’t you know staring at someone while they’re sleeping is a tad creepy, Nahyuta?”
“I haven’t been here long. I thoughtyou were coming to get me at the airport. After waiting for about an hour and not getting an answer from you whenI called, I decided to take a cab here. I was worried, so I called the office…Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth saidyou went home early because you were, as he said, as sick as a dog.” He thought for a moment. “You know, I never truly understood the pointof that English expression…dogs aren’t usually sick, are they?”
Crap. Withhis head as foggy and disoriented as it was, Simon completely forgot that hewas supposed to pick Nahyuta up today. For some reason he had started thinking it was tomorrow that Nahyuta was landing. “Shit, Nahyuta, I’m sorry. Ishouldn’t have stood you up like that.” Simon struggled to bring himself into a sitting position, groaning theentire time and coughing up a storm, making sure to cover his mouth in thecrook of his arm so as to not spread his germs to Nahyuta.
“I’ll admit I wasangry, but it is hard to stay that way when you look so pitiful,” Nahyuta said, with an innocent smile on his face. Simonpouted, not appreciating the adjective, but a well-timed sneeze didn’t help hisnon-verbal argument at all. “And youdidn’t even get undressed or anything. Honestly, can you even take care of yourself without me around?”
Nahyuta took off Simon’s boots and tossed them tothe side. “I’m fine, Nahyuta.” The monkjust rolled his eyes and held out a hand to help Simon up.
“Sure. Your dull eyes and pale…er, paler skinjust scream the image of perfect health. Not to mention the coughing songs you’ve serenaded me with already.”
Despite Simon’s instinct to argue, he justallowed Nahyuta to help him to his feet, and he couldn’t stop himself fromslouching as his head spun from the level change. Nahyuta’s arm was around his waist, anddespite how much Simon was sweating from fever, he appreciated thecloseness. He missed his boyfriend, andcursed the fact that he got sick on the day he landed in the states.
“Into bed, you,” Nahyuta ordered once theyreached the bedroom. He took off Simon’scoat, vest, and shirt, and offered him a loose black t-shirt instead. After Simon put it on, he removed his hairfrom his ponytail and laid down on the bed. Once Simon was on the mattress, Nahyuta was also stripping him of hisdress pants, leaving Simon in just his underwear as he instructed him to getunder the covers.
Simon was in no condition or mood to argue, so hejust did as he was told, settling into the plush pillows and bringing the coversover him. Nahyuta kissed his forehead, despite the sweat that had accumulated on his brow, and informed him he wouldbe right back. Simon closed his eyes andcoughed a few more times, feeling hot and yet also shivering under hisblanket. He was miserable right now, and once again cursed this illness for keepinghim from being able to attend to Nahyuta the way he ought to.
Nahyuta soon returned with a glass of water, somepills, and a wet kitchen towel. Heplaced the pills and the water on the nightstand next to the bed, and gentlyput the cloth on Simon’s head. It wascold to the touch, and Simon flinched at first…though it took very little timebefore it felt amazing. He couldn’t helpit – he smiled. A big grateful andalmost goofy smile that never would have come across his face had he been inhis right mind. “Thank you Nahyuta. I missed you.”
“And I you, love,” Nahyuta replied, returningSimon’s smile with one of his own. “You do need to take these though,” he said,as he grabbed the water and pills and held them out. Simon struggled to put himself in a sittingposition, but took one of the pills from Nahyuta’s hand and popped it into hismouth. He then allowed Nahyuta to bringthe glass of water to his lips and he felt the cool crisp liquid soothe hisburning throat as he swallowed. Theyrepeated this twice more until all three pills were in Simon’s system. He leaned back down, snuggling into theblankets.
“I’ll let you sleep,” Nahyuta whispered, beforemoving to walk away. However, Simoncaught his wrist, and he looked back.
“Can…you stay? Or...maybe you shouldn’t…I wouldn’t want you to catch anything fromme. Sorry.” Simon released his grip on Nahyuta and lookedsad, turning away.
Nahyuta just sighed, but his smile indicated thathe was far from annoyed. Instead, hekicked off his boots and shed his own jacket before climbing into bed andbringing Simon into his arms.
“I wouldn’t want to leave my sick panda all byhimself.”
Simon smiled again and closed his eyes.
He already felt a little bit better as he settledinto Nahyuta’s embrace.
a concept: when simon and athena are alone (and by alone i mean when none of their friends are around to hold this over simon's head), he calls her dear and other comparable terms of endearment in a 'worried-though-i-damn-well-know-i-shouldnt-be' mother hen fashion?
It’s so good it’s too good I’m wiping away tears as we speak
Athena does NOT stop laughing the first time he does it, and Simon’s a sourpuss, but he does it again later that night, and she tells him she doesn’t mind it. Just so long as he doesn’t get any ideas and thinking she’s some 11 year old girl again.
He is CERTAINLY a mother hen when it’s just them hanging out. He’s such a dad/brother/uncle to her and always makes sure she has enough food and if she falls asleep on him (which probably happens a lot) he’s getting her to bed proper. And he always manages to make it seem like he’s annoyed for having to do these things, but Athena can hear the truth and also she knows Simon better than anyone else bye
Everyone probably wonders what their friendship is really like since Public Athena and Simon are different than Private, Best Bros Athena and Simon. It’s the best friendship, they pick on each other all the time and have nice heart to hearts and there is nothing more pure in this world amen

"but then one of the bolder women leaned in, showing off her ample cleavage in a way that he imagined was meant to be sexy. If you liked that sort of thing." simon blackquill has no time for your heterosexual nonsense
I LITERALLY JUST SPIT OUT MY WATER THIS IS TOO GOOD AND ACCURATE
Simon is too gay and just wants to be left alone and not deal with all this.
Franziska is probably not very happy about having to mentor this uppity 17 year old kid who is absurdly cocky for not really having too many wins. (Ohh later on, she’s actually pretty upset with him for screwing over Phoenix hehe.) Okay so anyway she’s very annoyed since he probably doesn’t apply himself that hard now that he’s passed all the tests and his music career is taking off? So Franziska wonders what the point of mentoring him is if he’s just going to play concerts all the time instead ??? Klavier finally gets a case though, and she watches as co-counsel. And he finally pulls through.
Klav is probably pretty intense during his first few trials, and he (at least to her) clearly panics when things aren’t going his way for a little bit. He tries asking her for help, but Franziska thoroughly believes that if he’s made it this far without her assistance, he can keep going. She could do without the guitar riff and the sunglasses indoors thing, but she’ll take it his hard-earned win, congratulating him on a job well done.
SO FLIP SIDE Klavier is probably mostly intimidated by her being his mentor because uh hello the amazing and perfect Franziska von Karma helping him like this? Never in his wildest dreams did he think this would come true. He knew she would be strict and intense, but WOW not like that. So he eventually just stops working as hard, since she demands more and more?? And besides, he still has his musical career to fall back on, so he’s not too worried.
THEN HELLO AJ ERA. He loses Daryan and Kristoph within quick succession and there’s not much he can do but just.....feel really bad? No one is helping, sadly, and he doesn’t know who he could reach out to. Until perfect Franziska von Karma storms into the office, demanding he tell her exactly what had happened. She obviously would have known about everything already from the news and from her little brother, but she’s got to take care of her cocky mentee!
@mesa-verde calls her his Angry German Mom, and I am hopeful that by the events of DD they are best buds and complain in German a lot to each other, since she eventually finds out he wasn’t faking it all along
I JUST LOVE THEM AND WANT THEM TO BE LOVED AS THEY SHOULD BE
