DMC Self-directed
As I have decided to create a display that is made from reused materials that keeps being eco friendly in mind, I have decided to look at particular shops to display this. There is a health food shop on Woolton Road that also stocks home decor. I think this would be the ideal shop to display my lasercut as it also has a tree illustrated on the window in its existing display
DMC Self Directed Evaluation
The final cut of the snowflake decorations has been successful. I am pleased with the neat lines and that I joined the edges so the machine cut correctly, something I have not managed with previous cuts. There are areas of my work that I feel I definitely could have improved on. I am not very competent on illustrator but the work would have benefited from me drawing more complicated and varied snowflake shapes. Perhaps a series of different snowflakes. This would have shown more ambition.
I struggled to find the right material to work with. Deciding to reuse and be more eco friendly limits you. In terms of aesthetics, white paper or clear acrylic would have been more suited to snowflakes. But I wanted to use plywood off cuts to be in keeping with my idea of reusing. Perhaps plywood is not the best material to have used to show delicate snowflakes.
I think drawing more complicated shapes on illustrator and probably engraving lines to give the work more detail would have added a better and more professional finish to my work. Perhaps from my own Illustrations. As an overall finish for the work I would think about screenprinting the plywood before cutting. Engraving into this would make the detail stronger and bolder.
I like the relation of my work to the theme of hide and reveal. The work can be seen from different angles and has different uses. This allows it to be developed and helps me see the changes I could make to improve on it.

Drawing on illustrator has been challenging for me, however I paid special attention to the joins and corners and I have successfully drawn 6 snowflakes. All in proportion and accurately. I am pleased with with the precision I have been able to draw with even though I have struggled with illustrator.

Since coming up with the final design for my laser cut decorations I have decided to use an A3 piece of plywood. Instead of just the snowflake cut shapes I want to use the whole board as my final piece. As a whole the piece will be 6 circles of different sizes with snowflakes cut in the middle of each. These circles can then be lifted out, and the snowflakes inside then lifted out. The work will suggest one decoration in each circle, however there will actually be two. This is the hide and the reveal.
DMC Self-Directed- Initial ideas
As I first began to think about the self directed brief I was clear that I wanted to create a shop window display. However I have soon realised that the ideas that I have come up with won’t just fit as a display but as an ornament. I want to laser cut snowflakes into Christmas ornaments. As I started to sketch possible patterns and shapes i began to see that the outline and cuts that would be scrap can be used as separate ornaments themselves. I like this idea within the Hide and Reveal concept.
With that concept in mind I have thought about how each year decorations are put away or thrown away. I want to create something with the idea of sustainability in mind. Something for a small shop to display and sell. The idea of keeping the scrap as part of the work fits this. This will be the packaging that will be work in its own right.
I have thought about doing a jigsaw, the jigsaw pieces can be taken away to be used separately as decorations themselves.

Its half an hour before the deadline and i have finished!!! I CAN NOT believe i have actually done it. I am so happy yet still a little stressed ha! I have loved this module so much and i have learnt ALOT! I feel that i should defiantly work on my time management. Although i have worked very hard to create the book i should of took into consideration that i may of ran into a few problems with the printing and laser cutting machine. Therefore, i should of been testing the cuts for my book way before the last week before deadline. I know that if i had done this then i wouldn't of been so stressed over it and i would of produced a better quality book. I feel that i have certainly learned from my mistakes.
I have finally laser cut my book!
After trying to cut my book for the last 3 days i ran out of time on Friday (the last day to cut) I was absolutely gutted but i was determine to try and make my book for the deadline so i decided to have a go at hand cutting the book instead. Although this worked, it looked untidy and very unprofessional. I was so stressed and i think i cried about 10 million times. Today i came into university to ask if i could use the Laser cutting machine. I know that the studio wasn't open for students but i thought if i explained my situation then someone would be able to help. After asking Neville he said i could go on it for a little while ( this was for 20 minutes) Did i finish the cutting NO? Would he let me finish it? NO! After talking to Chris about it, he told me that i could laser cut my designs while Ian mitchell was cutting his, which was really good. Although i am grateful, i am so annoyed that the laser cutting machine were FREE ALL DAY but none would let me on them until 5.30pm ( After Neville has gone home). which was strange. I had been in university since 9 so i found it bit unfair. Anyway, it took me around an hour and half to cut the book. Some pages aren't as neat as i wanted them to be and i still had a few problems with the cutting but i had to work with what i had. Im just so happy i was able to laser cut at least something. What next? I have to bind my book, take photos and i only have 4 hours to do it in. WISH ME LUCK!!!
Laser cutting session
Today i went into the laser cutting studio to cut the pages for my book. Although the outline was exactly in the same place as the print out, the laser cutting machine was well off. Therefore it wasn't cutting them in the same position. I spent 2 full hours trying to cut them, until my time was up. The time goes so fast especially when you are waiting for around 20 minutes for someone to actually help you with the problem. It seems that even though the template and design are in exactly the same place, the printer is around 3mm out so i have to change the position of my designs and print them off again. How annoying.
