Week of July 15th 2012

Hey Now,

Another good week, glad everyone survived the Fourth of July ok, except I do have a picture of Izzi throwing upfrom drinking too much and it looked pretty early in the day.

 Just few quick points, kitchen staff is short a few people so whatever extra the counter staff can do to help will be appreciated, a lot of cooks are working without a day off and doubles so if you can bring something downstairs, empty their trash or help with dishes. Please don't ignore the counter to do something in the kitchen because that just makes it harder for everyone. The real help would be at the end of the shift, getting the dining room wrapped up by planning ahead and then helping.

The other thing was something that I said that on reflection seemed very smart so I must have read it somewhere and I am failing to site a source but who cares. I was talking about what it takes to lead other people. This is something we all have to do at sometime or other and hopefully I set a good example. Here it is, the secret to leadership

1. Treat people the way that you want to be treated

2. Try not to be a douche if you can help it 

3. Try to learn something from every situation 

4. Recognize everyone for more than just the job they do now, today's dish/prep could own a chain of restaurants in a few years or be a famous singer(Tomas may end up being both)

5. Most important - The way to lead, is not to be the fastest or the most experienced or the most hardworking(though it helps some). People follow someone who they think cares the most, in our case-it would be the guest experience, quality and taste of the food. Its the person who stops talking to a co-worker and greets a guest, or who doesn't think its not good enough and makes it again, and makes sure other people working with them do a little more for the customers.

You don't have to read books or get an MBA you just need to give a shit. In this world now, that stands out more than anything. See I told you that you will get something more valuable than money from this job- even if you aren't ready to be that person yet, at least think about it.

One last question, why is that when I offer $20 dollars to list 5 things that make us different that only 2 people spent the 30 seconds to earn it. That is out of 17 current employees that get this email. Did everyone hit the lottery at once.
