Maryland Farms Oak, Lone Oak Cemetery, Carville, LA. So common are oaks in south Louisiana that the image of a solitary oak seems arresting. Lone Oak Cemetery in Carville offers a study in isolation. That’s fitting, perhaps, because Carville also was the home of the continental United States’ sole leprosy colony and sanitarium in the 1900s. The Lone Oak Cemetery’s modern use is a burial ground for inmates of the Louisiana prison system.
