Today's cheap pawnshop score.
Today's board: Fx10 - 280 - 490 - scrambler - Cornish style muff - fx90 - bluesbreaker style od - the driver - unholy grail - MXR stereo trem splits to both meet maude and the pds 1002 - digitech out to supertwin/fairfield out to univox u1246bass. Panning between two very different delays is my new favourite thing.
Today's project. Rehouse/true bypass for Jim from my favourite local metal band The Weir. https://theweir.bandcamp.com Also the milk box is a very nice compressor.
DOD
I got this early 80s DOD 280 compressor from my wife for my birthday a few months ago. Today I made it mine. The 280 is a wonderful yet quirky optical compressor that (in my opinion) does one magical thing. With the comp and level set fairly low (as pictured) it has a very quick attack followed by a relatively slow release which creates a very “swell” like quality. It reminds me very much of the clean guitar track in my bloody valentines “don’t ask why”. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MRHqSqpWYUE Followed by a dirt pedal this creates luscious “gain swells” I had only ever imagined. I wanted to take advantage of this unique quality so I figured out how to tweak that magical release/recovery time. On the schematic there’s a 47uf capacitor to ground. This value gives a release time of around 400-500 milliseconds. I added a toggle switch which adds a second 47uf cap in parallel on one side and a huge 100uf cap on the other. Now I can toggle between the stock 500ms in the center position, close to a full second on one side and close to 2 full seconds on the other. The slowest setting is magical with my lap steel! While I was in there I added a touch more bass response by swapping the 0.047uf cap that comes from the opamps negative feedback path to 0.1uf. Adding some bass here drives the vactrol a bit harder as well for some heavier compression at higher settings. I never ever expected to be so in to a compressor but this thing changed my mind big time.
delays for days and days and days and days and days and days and days....
