It was around the evening where you laid in bed, laying on your side with a pillow clutched to your chest as you thought over the memories. It had been 6 years since someone you loved passed away. A great friend and family member who stuck up for you all the time and made you become who you are now. Your throat was burning to begin with. Your eyes burning to go to sleep but you just laid there in an empty bed.
A few minutes into the night, you choked a sob. Smelling your husband’s scent on his pillow, wanting him to come home.
The tears came falling down over be bridge of your nose and across your cheek, soaking the pillow below where your head rested. You hear a clicking sound of claws and the creak of the door into your bedroom swings open and you hear more clicking against the wood.
Something jumps on the bed and makes it way over to you. Dodger, your husband’s dog, your baby, comes over and licks your cheek, removing the tears that fell. His nose pokes your brow and he lays on his stomach, his nose began to nudge into your hand, removing it’s grasp for your hand to place right on his head. You sniffled and removed the pillow from your chest to welcome Dodger into your arms.
“I’m sorry, bubba. Am I worrying you?” You muttered, he army crawls to your stomach and lays close to you. His head lifted up to lick your chin as your arm wraps around his body like a body pillow. He then twists his body so his back was against you when he lays on his side. His head lifts up to check on you. Your lips gently kiss the top of his head and you sniffled.
“Hey...” You hear someone say.
You look over and saw Chris stand in the doorway, “What’s going on?” He asks sincerely. He kicks off his shoes and comes around behind you, instantly joining you back-to-chest as he pulled against his. You sniffled and wiped your cheeks. “I’m just...” You struggled to talk, knowing when someone asks you, you instantly turn into a waterfall of tears. Chris only shushed you softly. “It’s okay. I’m here. You don’t have to speak. I got you.” His arms snake around your waist and held you there.
He comforted you like no other. Feeling the warmth between two best boys in the house, you felt safe. And you managed to fall asleep between them. But you would never forget who came first to comfort you. Dodger was a good boy.
