When it comes to animals, adopt don’t shop. But if you’re deadset on shopping for a pet (and I can understand reasons for doing so, it’s just not my cup of tea), buy from a reputable breeder. Yes it’s going to be more expensive, but you are guaranteed a healthier dog with a better temperment, and if more people who insist on buying animals from reputable breeders, that will raise the standards for all breeders to become more reputable by breeder for healthier animals. Low quality puppy and other pet mills will have fewer customers, and will be forced to increase the quality of their breeding standards to appeal to more customers. More competition will lower the price but quality (and therefore health) of the animals bred will increase.
Tldr; adopt don’t shop, but if you’re going to shop, buy a pet from a reputable breeder. Not puppy/pet mills, not common pet stores, but breeders with paperwork who know what they’re talking about. Raising your standards will raise the standard of animal breeders, leading to healthier pets being bred.
