Sketchbook is an annual short play festival that mixes art, music, and media to create 16 world premiere seven minute plays. This year’s festival features an eclectic lineup of returning veterans and up-and-comers.
Sketchbook returns to the Chopin Theatre for a two week run of performances January 14th-24th. But before we finalize the productions, Collaboraction holds Open Studio Sessions to get a glimpse behind the scenes at what our collaborators are creating. All of the titles of the studio sessions are from the poem Sunday Morning by Wallace Stevens.
For our first event, Blood of Paradise, the production staff, actors, writers, and friends all spoke about their role in the production and their history with the festival.
Wesley Kimler’s words expressed what every other attendee was feeling,
“I don’t want this to be about the past. I want this to be about what we are building for the future. The connections and art we have built around these people. This is about what’s after Sketchbook.”
Stellar musical performances from Steve Gilpin, Consuelo Lepauw, Nick Tremulous and DJ Julio Bishop helped to usher in the first of three events at Kimler’s Studio.
Special Guest John Cabrera, one of the developers of Sketchbook, Skyped in to talk about the festival’s history and creation.
And we got to hear poetry from The After as performed by Samantha Dedian.
The next Sketchbook pre-show event, “Domination of Black”, is on November 18th @ Wesley Kimler’s studio. You’ll be given an inside look at some of the pieces being developed by our talented collaborators.
