We saved this beautiful loon yesterday! She was disoriented, her legs were impaired, and she couldn't fly or swim. We called California Wildlife Center @cawildlife [phone], & Sarah from CWC picked her up and got her medical attention asap. Thanks, Sarah, for getting her right after you saved a sea lion!! We also saw a dead pelican on the beach 😭 I Googled a bit, and learned the West Coast of CA is seeing a significant uptick in loons, sea lions, and other marine mammals affected by Domoic Acid poisoning - which comes from Pseudo-nitzschia algae. Some think this algae is producing the poison due to climate change. See the article screenshots and look up other sources on Google. Zombie Sea Lions: On May 3rd of 1998, over 400 sea lions began washing ashore in California, in a state of total zombification. They groan incoherently... they rock back and forth, and howl into the air, while having zero awareness of anything around them. The infected Sea Lions all die of seizures and brain damage as a result of domoic acid poisoning. When water temperatures raise, algee blooms generate neurotoxins, which are eaten by sardines, shellfish and cetaceans... once the Sea Lions, and other sea life, ingest the poison-tainted animals, they die.
