So, Hawk. Good guy? Bad guy? He was that Monarch guy, right? And then he came back and was a hero again? Is this another Parallax situation? Can he be trusted?

The man known as Hawk was granted an impossible burden by forces far beyond his own control. Had the things that he loved the most taken from him more than once, and we lead astray by forces that wished not only for his downfall but to USE his downfall as a method by which to destroy the world as we known it and reign over the ashes with him as puppet king.

As with when I have been asked about men like the JSA's Atom Smasher, I'm not going to deny that Hawk has made mistakes. The only thing I truly CAN do is lay the facts on the table as I understand them and to the best of my ability give you folks the perspective to make your own choice in relation to the choices made by those who know the man called Hawk better than you or I ever will.

The personal lives and real names of the men who originally called themselves Hawk and Dove are unknown to us even to this day. When Hawk and Dove first appeared it was a pair of men, brothers, one empowered by the Lords of Chaos to act as harbinger of rage and war. The other empowered by a Lord of Order to be the carrier of peace and contentment. While this may sound like a cut and dried moral paradigm those of you who are even passingly familiar with the winds of magic know that NEITHER the Lords of Order nor Chaos actually have humanity's best interest at heart. Only their balance and inability to overcome each other keeps the world as we understand it turning, thus the actions of the two renegade Lords in the creation of Hawk and Dove was a radical act of just balance keeping both power sets in check.

The brothers were known first and foremost for their bickering. Hawk was confident and fiery but prone to acting rashly. Dove was just and patient but often paralyzed by indecision. Only by acting together did they make an unstoppable duo that Washington DC grew to trust and adore. They became members in good standing of the Teen Titans, the trust the world and the heroic community held in them was beyond reproach.

That was until the original Dove lost his life in the first multiversal crisis. In saving the life of a child he was attacked from behind by one of the Anti-Monitor's shadow demons. Devastated of course by the loss of not only his brother but his partner, Hawk became more and more erratic. Haunted as well by a supervillain calling himself Kestrel, even as the new Dove a young woman who seemingly had no relation to him attempted to act as the counterbalance his brother once did. This confrontation provides us to seed to explain, in part, Hawk's future actions.

Kestrel once WAS Hawk, or at least a previous bearer of the mantle. Seeking to tempt Hawk to fall to the darkness, that a world that could not keep his brother safe, that could not cherish and appreciate such a peaceful soul had no hope and no reason to go on turning. The new Dove was able to intercede on humanity's behalf and pull Hawk back from the brink.

But it was at that moment the vagaries of the multiverse forked.

In our world, Hawk accepted the help of the second Dove and the two became a duo balancing one another as they always had. In another world though, Hawk was indeed lead astray and accepted his role as the bringer of ruin and war. In a blasted heath of a future timeline he became known under the name Monarch. That Monarch, in a blind attempt to make sure his timeline would come to pass tried to kill the second Dove in our current time. His plan failed and Monarch was thwarted and it was THIS being, Monarch, that eventually became lost and maddened by the timestream eventually becoming the villain called Extant.

That's the difference here, as I understand it. The Hawk that we know never became Monarch save for perhaps a short time during the original Monarch's plot when he thought the he had lost the most important person in his life for a second time. But, with his soul saved from that eventuality he has instead been stuck carrying the sins of men who he never became.

...there's a metaphor here about being judged by the court of public opinion but that conclusion is for poets, not historians.
