Bio: Life at sea has been the only thing Donovan has ever known. He was born and raised in a small town in Basbron where merchants and traders often docked and did business. They were poor. Too poor to properly give him an education. And often times, too poor to have proper meals throughout the month, leaving him scrawny and malnourished. His father, sometimes absent for months, was a sailor on a merchant’s ship, the Leander, soon after he turned nine, he joined the crew as well, much to his mother’s displeasure.
At first, he didn’t offer much, aside from the typical duties of a cabin boy. Helping the cooks prepare and distribute food. Carrying messages to the other officers on board. He even would occasionally learn to steer the ship whenever the weather was good. The captain, a man who simply went by the name of Tidus, seemed to take quite the liking to Donovan, having taken notice just how hard he worked.
He worked aboard the Leander for the next few years. He became first mate by the time he was twenty once the position became open. He was very popular amongst the crew. Unfortunately, his promotion was very short lived as one night while at sea, a storm hit during the middle of the night. Waves taller than the Leander washed over the ship, capsizing it and killing most of if not all of the crew.
Donovan was half dead, floating along with the current, draped across several pieces of busted wooden planks. Barely conscious, he woke up aboard another ship, having been rescued once a crew member had noticed him floating in the water. Once he was able to regain himself, get some food in his belly and drank fresh water, it became very apparent that he was aboard a pirate ship.
The captain introduced himself as Kingsley Haynes, pirate lord and captain of the Lost Mayflower. He was a decent enough fellow. For a pirate. He even offered him a ride to port when his offer of Donovan joining the crew was turned down. Obviously, he had to work until then. “No man eats or sleeps on my ship without earning his keep,” he’d say. Once they got to port, however, Donovan had changed his mind on not joining the crew, having grown to like most of them.
Two years later, the King’s Tournament commences, and Kingsley dies in battle. Malkiel Bray, the quartermaster, takes his place as Captain. And where Kingsley was a just and honorable man, Malkiel was quick to prove he was the opposite. Kingsley was merciful and offered most a space on the ship. Malkiel killed everyone aboard opposing ships. He even threw members of his crew overboard or gutted them then and there.
The crew didn’t like him. And he certainly didn’t like Donovan.
He gathered the trust of those who opposed Malkiel little by little, until he lead a mutiny against him and the few men who feared him too much to revolt against him. Donovan over powered the captain, and eventually marooned him and his men on a deserted island. He became Captain after that, and has been for sixteen years.
