CHAPTER ONE:
Deep breath. Just take a deep breath. It’s okay. Everything’s going to be okay....
Amelia sighed out loud as she sat on the bathroom floor, trying not to psych herself out. The room was spinning; she felt nauseous and her head hurt. She just wanted to lay down and go back to sleep. A soft knock on the bathroom door, pulled Amelia out of her thoughts and brought her back to reality. It was then that she realized how long she had actually been in that bathroom. When she heard Owen’s gentle voice through the door asking her if she was okay, she couldn’t keep the small smile from forming on her lips. Amelia stood up and put the stick she was holding in her pocket, then she opened the bathroom door and looked up at him with a small smile. “I’m okay. Sorry, I just... I might have been too tired to get up.” She said with a small laugh.
Owen smiled and tilted his head to the side as he looked at her, admiring her. “You need to sleep.” He said with a small laugh and pressed a soft, quick kiss to her cheek. “I’m going to take a quick shower. Why don’t you lay down for a while and then maybe when you wake up, we can take Leo to the park?” He suggested as she moved away from the door so he could go in.
“Owen...” Amelia said quietly. She turned around and met his eyes just before he closed the bathroom door.
“Yeah?” He asked softly, raising his brows in response.
Amelia took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Just tell him, Amelia. Say it. Two words. Just say it. “Um..” She looked down for a second before meeting his eyes again and offering him a small smile. “I, um... I was thinking maybe we could get lunch after we take Leo to the park? We haven’t really spent much time together the past few days...” She spoke softly.
Owen smiled, his eyes answering her before his mouth could. “Yeah, of course. Whatever you want. Just get some rest, okay?” He said.
Amelia nodded with a small smile as she watched him close the bathroom door, then she made her way over to their bed and laid down. They both had the day off and they wanted to spend it together, so why not? Maybe Amelia would get the chance to tell Owen her news. She wanted to wait until the right time, but she was scared; not because of what he would say, but because she hadn’t been pregnant since her unicorn baby. That’s what scared her. She didn’t want to go through that again; she didn’t know if it would happen again, of course she knew that, but there was a chance. There was always a chance. Amelia took a deep breath as she tried to get those thoughts out of her head. She didn’t want to think about any of that right now; she just wanted to sleep. Her eyes were heavy and her head hurt, so she should fall asleep rather quickly. When Amelia heard the shower turn on, she smiled a little to herself and closed her eyes, letting sleep take over.
***
Owen walked into the bedroom after he was done in the shower. He wasn’t in there long so he tried his best to be quiet while he moved around and gathered his clothes to put them on. He smiled when he saw Amelia sleeping peacefully on his side of the bed, cuddled up to his pillow. He loved it when she slept on his pillow because it always smelled like her shampoo when he went to bed at night. That was one of his favorite smells. After he was dressed, he heard Leo on the baby monitor, so he left Amelia there to sleep while he went to get him.
Owen walked into Leo’s room and smiled when he saw him standing up in his crib. He picked him up and kissed his forehead, holding him close against his chest. “Good morning, sweet boy.” He whispered. “Let’s get you changed and then we can go see mommy, huh?” He said as he grabbed a diaper and an outfit for Leo. When he was done changing him, Owen picked him back up and carried him to his and Amelia’s room. He sat down on her side of the bed, since she was still laying on his side, and put Leo down between them so he could crawl over to her like he did almost every morning when they didn’t have to get up early.
Leo smiled at Owen before he put his little hands on Amelia’s arm and tried to crawl over her. Amelia woke up when she felt his little body on her side and she smiled instantly, grabbing him and pulling him down on her other side. Leo giggled as she hugged him close and tickled him gently. “Good morning, my sweet, handsome boy.” She whispered before placing a kiss on his cheek.
“Hey, what about me?” Owen asked, feigning jealousy.
Amelia turned on her back, still holding Leo close, and laughed softly as she looked up at him. “You’ve already seen me this morning. But, good morning to you, too.” She said.
Owen smiled. “What? I’m not sweet or handsome? I just get a ‘good morning’? Not even a kiss?” He asked.
“Mm, nope. All of my kisses belong to Leo now.” Amelia teased as she placed another kiss on Leo’s forehead. “Right, Leo?” Leo giggled in response and looked up at Owen as if he was waiting for him to say something. Amelia looked up at him, too, a huge smile on her face.
Owen shook his head and laughed softly. “You two are evil when you’re together.” He said. “Pure evil.”
Amelia laughed and sat up, holding Leo against her chest. She leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to Owen’s cheek, then she leaned up to whisper in his ear, “I’ll say a proper good morning to you after bedtime later.” She said.
Amelia’s voice sent shivers down his spine and she knew it, too. He smiled and shook his head again as he stood up and reached for Leo. “Evil.” He said softly.
Amelia laughed as she handed Leo to him before she got up and went to grab some clothes for a shower. While she took a shower, Owen took Leo into the kitchen and put him in his high chair while he made something small for breakfast. They were going to go out for lunch, so he figured he better not make too much or it would ruin their appetites when it came time to eat lunch. Owen gave Leo some milk in his bottle to occupy him while he cooked so he didn’t have to worry about him.
By the time breakfast was done, Amelia was out of the shower. Owen knew she was in the kitchen before he ever saw her because he could smell the fresh scent of her shampoo. He smiled to himself as he finished up and set everything on the table where she and Leo sat. Amelia gave Leo his food while Owen poured them some coffee, then when he sat down, he handed her her mug. “How was Betty this morning?” She asked him before taking a small sip of her coffee.
“She was good. She’s excited about next week.” Owen said. “She won’t say, but you can tell.” He said with a smile.
Amelia smiled as she looked at Leo. “I’m excited, too. I mean... I know they’re ours; that they’re not going anywhere, but I don’t think it’ll actually feel real until the adoption is final, you know?” She said as she met Owen’s eyes.
Owen nodded in agreement. “I know. Betty’s counting down the days until we get that piece of paper.” He said with a small laugh. “Which, I mean, I don’t blame her. She’s been through hell. Both of them have. They deserve some stability. They deserve to have a good life.” He said. “And I’m glad that we’re the ones who can give that to them. Thank you, by the way.” He told her.
Amelia raised a brow and tilted her head, a little confused. “What are you thanking me for?” She asked.
“For staying.” Owen answered. “If you hadn’t stayed that night.. the night that I got Leo... I don’t know where we would be right now. But, you did. And now we have this amazing life together, and I have you to thank for that.”
Amelia smiled and shook her head. “Owen, no. We have this amazing life because of you. You wanted to be a dad so bad you were willing to do anything to make that happen. And look at you now. You’re an amazing dad to Leo and to Betty. They couldn’t ask for a better one.” She said with a smile. Tell him, Amelia. He’ll be so excited. Just tell him.
“What’s wrong?” Owen asked, breaking her from her thoughts.
Amelia looked at him, meeting his eyes again. “What do you mean?” She asked. “Why would something be wrong?”
“Your face. You were smiling and then all of a sudden you stopped and looked... worried.” He responded. “What is it?” He asked.
“Um.. no, it’s.. it’s nothing. I just...” She sighed, “I don’t know. I’m just not all that hungry right now.”
“Is everything okay? Are you sick?” Owen asked her, concerned.
“No, no. It’s not that. I’m fine. I just... I’m not hungry right now is all. And if you expect me to eat lunch with you later....” She said with a small smile.
“Right.” He said. “I understand.”
Amelia nodded slightly and offered him a small smile as she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. She knew she needed to tell him, and she wanted to. She really did, but what if something happened? What if she miscarried? What if something was wrong with the baby? What if? She didn’t want to have to be there to witness that heartbreak, and she knew that it would break him. She’d seen it before; when they were trying for a baby when they first got married. When that stick read negative, she saw it in his eyes. He was heartbroken, and she couldn’t put him through that again. She just needed to find the right time to tell him. The real question was, though: when was the right time?
***
“You ready?” Owen asked Amelia as she grabbed her jacket and slipped it on. Even in August, Seattle could get cold at times so she wanted to be prepared. She was always cold anyway.
“Yeah. Ready when you are.” Amelia responded with a small smile.
Owen nodded as they walked out of the house and he locked the door behind them. The park was only a couple of blocks from the house and there was a small restaurant not too far from that, so they decided to walk instead of drive. It was pretty nice day out, so Owen thought why not? Leo loved being in his stroller outside, and they hadn’t been able to do that lately since they hardly ever had the day off together. It was nice, though.
When they got to the park, Owen took Leo to the swings and Amelia sat down on a bench not too far away. She smiled as she watched Owen and how he interacted with Leo. Everything she said to him earlier was the truth. He was a good dad. Amelia knew he would be a good dad to their baby. If there was a baby. Amelia sighed and tilted her head back a little, closing her eyes. That was the thing. If there was a baby. She was 85% sure she was pregnant, but that was just from the home pregnancy test she took. Actually, the four home pregnancy tests she took, but still. Amelia knew they weren’t always 100% correct. She needed a blood test and she needed one as soon as possible. She didn’t want to wait until then to tell Owen, though. She wanted to tell him now, but she just wasn’t sure. She didn’t know if she would ever be sure. He needed to know. He deserved to know. Amelia sighed out loud and opened her eyes again as she looked at Owen and Leo once more. She smiled as she heard Leo’s giggles echo throughout the park. That was one of her favorite sounds. She loved hearing him laugh and squeal when she or Owen did something that he thought was funny.
When Leo finally got tired of the swings, Owen brought him back over and sat down next to her. Leo immediately reached for her and she smiled as she took him in her arms, holding him close. Owen kissed her cheek and put his arm around her shoulders after Leo was settled in on her lap. “Are you okay?” He asked her quietly.
She looked at him and smiled. “I’m okay.” She said with a nod. She rubbed Leo’s back gently and took a deep breath as she looked down at him; that sweet little boy in her arms. She loved him like he was her own and she knew he loved her just as much; and pretty soon, in just a few days, he would be hers. Hers and Owen’s. She couldn’t be more excited. Amelia felt Owen’s eyes on her, and when she looked at him, she smiled again. “What?” She asked. “What’s with the staring?”
Owen smiled at her and shook his head. “You’re my wife. I believe I have the right to stare.” He teased.
“Oh, is that right? Well, you know I only married you so we could adopt these kids right?” She teased back.
Owen raised a brow and shook his head. “If that we’re true, you wouldn’t be sleeping in my bed every night. Or tell me you love me. Or wear my ring. Or–“
“Okay, okay. So maybe I do kind of love you.” Amelia laughed and kissed his cheek. “But that depends.”
Owen looked down at her and raised a brow, confused as to what she was saying. “Depends? On what exactly?”
Amelia took a deep breath and looked down at Leo again. She smiled wide and let a small laugh escape her lips as she finally met his eyes again. “On your reaction to what I’m about to tell you.” She said. When she saw the confused look on his face, she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and let out the breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “Owen, I’m pregnant.”

CHAPTER FOUR:
“She’s gone. She ran.”
Amelia couldn’t move. Her body felt like it was frozen, like her feet were glued to the floor. Her heart was pounding in her chest and she might have been holding Leo a little too tight against her. When Owen reached over and took him from her arms gently, she snapped out of her trance and looked him in the eyes. “I can’t believe this is happening again...” She whispered. “Did she take her phone?” She asked.
Owen nodded as she rubbed Leo’s back. “Yeah, I think so. I didn’t see it anywhere.” He said. He furrowed his brow and put his hand on Leo’s forehead, then he looked at Amelia again. “He’s burning up.”
“Yeah, um... that’s what I was trying to tell you when you walked in..” Amelia responded. God, how could this happen again? Why did Betty keep running away?
“Amelia?”
She jumped slightly when Owen’s hand touched her arm, then she shook her head and took a deep breath. “I’m fine. You try and get his fever down. I’ll see if I can get ahold of her.” She said as she walked out of the room.
Owen sighed and held Leo against his chest as he followed her out. As Owen went to the bathroom to get Leo some medicine, Amelia went to Betty’s room to see if she could find any kind of clue as to where the teenager had gone. They didn’t even know when she left, so as far as Amelia knew, she was long gone. There was no note, nothing. Amelia sighed out loud and slammed the window shut as hard as she could, making the glass shatter all over the floor. “Dammit!” She yelled, leaning back against the wall, another sigh escaping her lips.
When Owen heard the glass breaking, he rushed to the door and sighed when he saw what had happened. “Amelia..–“
“I’m sorry. I’ll fix it..” She whispered, trying to hold back her tears.
“Don’t worry about the window. Come in here with me. Come on.” He said gently.
Amelia sighed and looked around the room once more, hoping to find something, but there was nothing there to find. She walked slowly over to the door and took Owen’s hand as he led her out to the living room. Leo was asleep now in his arms, so after Amelia sat down, he walked back to Leo’s room and laid him down in his crib. On his way back to the living room, Owen stopped in his and Amelia’s room and grabbed their phones. He handed hers to her before he sat down next to her on the couch. “Did you get cut?” He asked her quietly. “Let me see.”
Amelia showed him her hands and let him examine them for cuts, but there was none. She was fine. She probably wouldn’t feel it anyway. She was numb. She couldn’t feel anything right now. “Amelia...” Owen said softly, so he didn’t scare her again. “Honey, look at me.” He said.
Amelia blinked once and turned her attention back to him. She met his eyes and she knew he was concerned, but for what exactly? For her? For Betty? For Leo? What else could go wrong? Amelia took a deep breath and looked at him, holding his hand in hers. She knew all of the stress wasn’t good for the baby, but she couldn’t help it; and she knew he was worried about her stressing too much. Betty was gone and Leo was sick. When she felt his arm go around her, she leaned into him and sighed once more as she grabbed her phone. “No calls, no texts... nothing. Why would she do this, Owen? I don’t understand. The adoption hearing is next week. She was so excited about it.” She said.
“I know. I don’t understand either. But, we’ll find her, okay? Try her cell.” He said softly.
Amelia took a deep breath and let it out slowly as she called Betty’s cell phone. She put it on speaker so Owen could hear, and listened as it rang a few times before her voicemail picked up. “Betty, it’s Amelia. I don’t know where you are or why you left, but could you please come home? We’re not mad, we just want to know that you’re safe. We love you.” Amelia said into the phone before she hung up. She laid her head on Owen’s shoulder. “We’re going to find her... right? She’ll come back?” She asked quietly.
Owen sighed as he rubbed her arm. “She’ll come back.” He said softly, and he really hoped he was right.
***
Amelia woke up and looked around, stretching a little as she tried to remember why she was on the couch. She sighed and looked at her phone to see what time it was. 7:48am. She still had her appointment with Arizona at nine, so she needed to shower and get ready. When she felt Owen stir beside her, she turned and looked at him and rested her hand on his leg. “Hey..” She said quietly. “Owen. Wake up.” She said as she patted his leg gently.
When he opened his eyes, he looked at her and sighed as he sat up. “We fell asleep on the couch?” He asked.
“We fell asleep on the couch.” She said with a nod.
“What time is it?”
“Almost eight. I need to shower.” She said.
Owen nodded. “Have you heard anything from Betty?” He asked quietly.
Amelia sighed and shook her head. “No.. not yet.” She said.
“You need to relax.” Owen said quietly.
“I can’t, Owen. Not until I know both of our kids are here and they’re safe.”
“Leo is safe. He’s fine. He’ll be fine. You don’t need to worry about him, okay? We’re doctors, he’s going to be fine.” Owen told her.
“And Betty?”
Owen sighed. “I.. I don’t know. She’ll come back, though. I do know that. She has before. She always comes back.” He said. Amelia sighed and rubbed her forehead. She didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t relax. Not now. Not when her kid was missing again. She needed Betty to be home safe with them. Instead she was probably roaming the streets or getting high in some alley and Amelia had no idea if she was safe or not. When Owen stood up and offered his hand to her, she looked up at him and raised a brow. “What are you doing?” She asked softly.
“We’re going to go take a shower and relax.” He said softly.
“Owen...” She sighed, “I’m not having sex with you right now.” She said.
“I know. But, you need to relax. Come on. We don’t have to have sex.” He said with a small smile. “Come on. Before Leo wakes up.”
Amelia sighed and took his hand. She stood up and walked with him to their bathroom. “I don’t think this is going to work.” She said as he turned the water on and stripped his clothes off. “It always works. Take off your clothes.” He said.
Amelia smiled just a little at his words and shook her head as she took her clothes off as well. When the water was warm enough, they both stepped in and he closed the shower door. Amelia closed her eyes as the water fell over her, and she couldn’t help but smile when she felt Owen’s strong arms around her waist from behind. He took one of his hands and moved her hair to the side off of her neck, then he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to the exposed skin there. Amelia tilted her head to the side to give him better access, keeping her eyes closed as she took deep breaths. Owen took his hand back down to her waist and moved it across her stomach, slowly bringing up toward her breasts. He could feel her breathing heavily now and he knew his plan was working. He moved his lips down her neck to her shoulder, kissing the little drops of water that landed on her skin from time to time. When she felt his hand on her breast, she took in a deep breath. Owen trailed his kisses down her shoulder to her back and eventually to the other side of her neck, making her tilt her head to the other side. He smiled a little and squeezed her breast gently before his hand to the other one. He circled her nipple with his thumb and smiled when she rested her head back on his shoulder.
Amelia reached back and ran her fingers through his hair as his lips kissed a trail down her neck and to her shoulder. She opened her eyes and raised her head up when she felt his hands on her waist. He turned her around in his arms and gently pushed her back against the shower wall, before he leaned down and took one of her breasts in his mouth. A soft moan escaped her lips as she combed her fingers through his hair again, letting her head rest back against the wall. “Owen..” She whispered, but he ignored her. He moved his lips to her other breast now, circling her nipple with his tongue. She moaned again, softly, and tugged at his hair gently. “Owen...” She said again, a little louder this time. Still nothing. God, he was killing her. He hadn’t even touched her sensitive spot yet. “Owen, please..” She whispered. Owen smiled as he trailed his kisses down her stomach to her lower abdomen, then back up to her neck, his hands exploring her body in every spot but the right one. She groaned in frustration as she felt his tongue on her nipple again. Looked like she was going to have to take matters into her own hands. When she felt one of Owen’s hands move down to her thigh, she grabbed it and held it in hers for a minute before guiding it between her legs. She inhaled sharply when his fingers finally found her clit and circled it, slowly. She moaned softly and squeezed his hand, willing him to go faster, but he kept his pace. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his body against hers, as close as he could get with his hand where it was. “Owen... come on.” She said. Owen smiled as he slowly moved his fingers around her clit, focusing only on that now. He knew what he was doing. He leaned forward until his lips were only inches from hers and he could feel her breath against his face. She grabbed his face in her hands and kissed him hard, moaning softly when she felt his tongue against her lower lip. She pulled back just slightly, only to catch her breath for a minute before kissing him again. “I’m never going to relax if you don’t move.” She whispered against his lips. “I need release.” She whispered. “Please..” She whispered before kissing him again, letting him slip his tongue into her mouth this time.
Owen felt himself getting harder after hearing her words and he silently cursed himself. That wasn’t the plan. He was there for her and only her. Now he needed to get this done and quickly. He quickened his pace, his fingers going directly across her clit now. Amelia moaned loudly against his lips and pulled back enough so she could breathe again. She leaned her head back against the wall again, but kept her fingers in his hair as he kissed her neck again. When he stopped moving his fingers all of a sudden, she whimpered softly at the loss of contact. When he pushed two fingers inside of her, though, she let out the breath she didn’t realize she was holding and tugged at his hair gently. She wrapped her other arm around his shoulders and held him against her chest as he moved his fingers in and out of her fast. She tried to stifle her moans, but it didn’t work. She tried to move her hips to match his rhythm, but he had her pressed tightly between the shower wall and his body, so she couldn’t move anything below the waist. She could feel him against her leg and she knew he was turned on now, too. Maybe that’s why he quickened his pace all of a sudden, but she wasn’t complaining. She didn’t want to leave him hanging though. That wouldn’t be fair. She told him she wasn’t going to have sex with him, but maybe.... “Owen.. Owen, wait.” She said, trying to catch her breath. When he stopped moving his fingers and looked at her, she had to bite her lip to stop herself from whimpering again.
“What’s wrong?” He whispered.
Amelia took a deep breath and moved his hand away from her, wrapping it around her waist, then she took his member in her hand and guided it between her legs. Owen moaned softly, but stopped himself from entering her. “Are you sure?” He asked quietly.
“I’m sure. Please.” She whispered back softly.
Owen smiled a little and lifted her up just slightly against the wall so he was even with her, then he entered her in one swift motion, going all the way in. He stayed still for a minute to let her adjust to his size, then when she nodded slightly to let him know she was okay, he started thrusting in and out, slowly at first. When he heard Amelia groan at his pace, he couldn’t help but smile. He quickly picked up the pace, thrusting into her as fast as he could in the shower. The shower floor was pretty slick, so they had to be careful, but from the sound of her moans, it was good enough for now. They were both so turned on by that point, it didn’t take either of them long to fall over the edge.
***
“Ugh, what kind of parents are we? One kid is sick and the other is missing and we just had sex in the shower.” Amelia said as she dried her hair. Owen laughed a little and kissed the top of her head as he buttoned his shirt. “You’re relaxed now, aren’t you?” He asked. Amelia smiled and rolled her eyes. “For now.” She said. “Are you sure we should go to the hospital, though? Leo’s sick and I don’t want to expose him to even more germs.” She said softly.
“I’ll see if he still has a fever.” Owen said. “If he does, I’ll stay here with him. But you need to go. Just to be sure.” He said. Amelia nodded and offered him a small smile as she watched him walk out of the bathroom. She was hoping that Leo was okay and that his fever broke because she didn’t want to go to her appointment alone. She didn’t know what caused the fever the night before though. Maybe he was just teething. She wasn’t sure. She just hoped that whatever it was, he was okay. When she was done in the bathroom, she went to their bedroom to grab a shirt from the closet. She already had her jeans on, she just needed a shirt. When she picked one out, she grabbed it and put it on just as Owen walked in with Leo in his arms. Amelia smiled when she saw the smile on Leo’s face get bigger when he saw her. Owen was right; his face did light up every time he saw her. It was the sweetest thing. When he reached for her, Amelia took him in her arms and put her hand on his forehead. She looked at Owen with a small smile. “No fever.” She said.
Owen smiled, “No fever.” He said. “Are you ready? We’re going to be late.” He said softly. “Yeah, I just gotta get my shoes on.” She said and handed Leo back to him. She walked over to the closet and grabbed her shoes, slipped them on and joined him by the door. “Let’s go.”
***
“Leo! Hi, baby! Gosh, you’re getting so big!” Arizona said in her usual cheerful voice as she walked into the exam room where Amelia and Owen were waiting. She kissed Leo’s cheek and smiled before she walked over to wash her hands. “How are you feeling?” She asked Amelia.
“I’m relaxed.” Amelia said and looked up at Owen, who smiled in response. Arizona raised a brow as she put gloves on and sat down on the stool in front of where Amelia laid on the exam table. “Relaxed, huh?” She asked. “You know, people who are actually relaxed don’t say that they’re relaxed.” She said, and laughed softly when Amelia rolled her eyes. “Alright, let’s get started and then you can rant.” She said with a small smile.
“Nope. I am relaxed. No need to rant.” Amelia said softly. Arizona laughed a little and shook her head as she turned the ultrasound monitor on. “Alright, this might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but it shouldn’t hurt.” She said softly as she grabbed the probe. Amelia closed her eyes for a second and took a deep breath, then she opened her eyes and looked at the monitor. “Well? What do you see?” She asked softly.
Arizona smiled as she looked at the monitor. She searched for a minute, and when her smile grew wider, Amelia knew that she was right. Arizona pointed to a small spot on the screen after she turned the monitor so they could see it better. “See that?” She asked. “That is your little baby.” She said with a smile as she looked at the two of them. “You’re about seven weeks now.” She said.
“So I am pregnant? For sure? 100%?” Amelia asked.
Arizona nodded. “You pregnant. For sure. 100%.” Amelia smiled as she looked up at Owen. “We’re having a baby.” She said.
Owen smiled at her, unable to hide his excitement. “We’re having a baby.”
