now i'm very curious about your opinions on varric! do you just dislike him or are there any reasons in particular?

i like varric sometimes and find him insufferable other times kjsdfskj.

i think my biggest beef with him is how often his opinions are taken as the voice of reason/the "correct" opinion, either by the narrative or the fandom. the fact that so many of varric's opinions are very centrist, especially in da2 but even going into da:i, compounds this frustration.

he has a lot of shitty views that i wish we could call him on more. in da2 he voices his opinion that helping the templars feels right and helping the mages feels like they're just helping dangerous ppl run amok, he calls merrill crazy, etc. his line at the end of cole's pq if you make him more of a spirit ("he could've been a person :(") also made me think less of him. i don't mind characters having prejudices tbh, in fact i think it makes sense that varric does most of the above things, but the lack of introspection on his part makes me less forgiving of them ksjdf.

i also just want more dwarf perspectives. it's been two games with him as the sole dwarf companion and he has a distinct lack of interest in dwarfy things. which is fine, i think that worked well in da2, but come descent and trespasser especially i wished we'd had another established dwarf's perspective of what was unfolding. if he has a role in da4 i hope it's minor and other dwarf characters are allowed to shine.

all this being said i do think he's an interesting character, for some of the above reasons, in fact. getting to write him for the zine fic it was fun getting to use my less-flattering interpretation but still keeping true to what i think is likeable/charming about him. and i quite like his friendship with my inquisitor... but also sometimes i want to shove him into a locker.

there are a couple other reasons but those are the big ones i think! ty for asking.

ok, i will say this: the presumption of my "lifer" status vs my ambitions & successes as a writer and scholar...that juxtaposition....it's been with me my whole life and it's why Critical Mad Studies is so important to me. i was deemed 2e as a kid. i grew up to be very crazy and very danger to themself and others and also very successful.

not only does CMS hold space for those things - what icarus'd called Mad/alternative forms of brilliance, or w/e - but the field, undisciplined as it is rn, is a space where only certain genres of Madperson can thrive, the kind for whom academia is possible. i am in these cracks where sane and insane people are both said not to live. i seize and engage the unruly, frightening Madnesses & eke them into the University, stealing & circulating resources as i pollinate
