The Spirit Moves to the Mambo
One thing that I love more than learning so many different dance styles, although I never completely understand any of them, is learning the history that is behind the origins of the music and dance that I just learned. I learned how with mambo, couples alternate between dancing with a partner and solo freestyled movements. A lot of this style of music and dance resembles what I know about salsa. The article Mambo’s Open Shines focuses on mambo in the mid-1950s at the Palladium ballroom. At this time the Palladium was famous for its unique racial integration that was not popular during this time. Here people of all mixing backgrounds were able to step away from there everyday lives and dance and be proper. Really the Palladium is made out to seem like a dream in most of the history books because of its progressive movements towards racial de-segregation. Behind all of the dancing and the glamor, there was still a lot of segregation going on within the walls of the Palladium. There were a variety of constraints from racism, sexism, and physical training. When dancing there would be a racial difference that created an inner and outer circle on the dance floor, which normally consisted of whites in the outer ring and people of color in the inner ring. Not to mention the seating arrangement consisting of that same outer circle getting actual seating while the inner circle had to sit on the floor. During this time a lot of Cuban forms of dance started to popularize and make their way to America, one of those dances being the Mambo. Although through popularization the mambo lost a lot of its authentic and traditional qualities. When the mambo emerged in the 1940s and 1950s it had a bouncy quality with alternating feet and hip movements. The mambo was not being danced in its traditional sense, that was not until Katherine Dunham came into the picture. Katherine Dunham was an African American choreographer and anthropologist who did fieldwork in multiple different countries. Katherine Dunham was the first individual at the time to take the uncultured version on the mambo and was able to take the movements and re-choreographed the dance to its original authentic glory that she was able to easily teach to individuals who did not have that cultural background. She was able to teach the original mambo with its proper technique. Apart from the racial differences, there were also a lot of gender differences when it comes to the Palladium. At the Palladium, men had a lot more freedoms than the women did. To be a woman at the Palladium is to be proper. The woman could not be as improvisational as the men when it came to the mambo. Not only that but for the sake of being proper women did not have the right to just go and dance for themselves but instead had to sit and wait around until a man would come up to them and ask them to dance. Overall, this article has shown me the evolution of the mambo and how it got to where it is today. Where others, myself included, can continue to test the limits and keep creating new spaces to explore your own movements.
